Navy Vet Looking To Start as a mariner

I retired in 2006 after 20 years as a cook in the Navy. I took a couple years to explore the land side of life but am ready to go back to sea. It is in my blood. I have obtained my initial passport, TWIC and mariner document but am kind of unsure where the best places to seek employment are. I would be looking to start as a chief cook. Any advice or leads would be greatly appreciated.

Something you might look into is SIU Inland and IBU unions for cooks jobs. Some are pretty good. Crowley ATBs are crewed with both unions depending on location. Cooking for 9 to 13 guys, 28/28 rotation, paid transportation and the day rate is around $300. Good luck!

You got to be kidding me… +/-300/ day for cooking ? hummpfht ! I am so not motivated to come into the office tommorow…lol

09 rate is $284.70, 2010 is 297.51 with SIU. The IBU has a lower rate but has ATO. The result is same pay. Not sure about IBU pension and insurance but under SIU, you get 2 for 1 contributions toward wage-related pension and Plan G medical.
