Merchant Mariner Pay 2024 NEW

Not sure, I do know you have to be a republican to work there. I’m serious.

I’ve heard more or less that exact thing on more than one occasion.

By reputation they have always been one of the highest paying, if not THE highest paying in the osv/mpsv world…but i’ve also heard their benefits package is pretty lean and expensive.

Would like to hear some real time info on this as well.

I just saw the below elsewhere in the foreign flag yachting world

  1. 2021 No salary increase
    2022: No salary increase
  2. 2023: No salary increase
  3. 2024: “Please accept my resignation”
  4. Captain: But you’re doing great. Why are you resigning, we need you!
  5. Crew Member: I accepted an offer with a training package; salary increase; 13th month bonus and more paid annual leave with a guarenteed annual salary review.
  6. 24 hours later…
  7. Captain: I have spoken to management and we can match the package you’ve been offered.
  8. Crew Member: Unfortunately, it’s too late.
  9. We need to encourage our Captains and Management Teams, regardless of the amount of layers, to be more proactive with crew packages, rather than reactive.
  10. If salaries and packages are left to stagnate, crew will naturally start to look elsewhere and typically, the employer will only find out when it’s too late.
  11. Although it is not the only variable; neglecting crew packages does contribute to poor longevity.
  12. In an industry where longevity is becoming an increasingly finite commo. Etc etc etc etc

When crappy companies (and the unions in their pockets) do not provide salary increases that keep up with the times - LEAVE for more money and benefits.

As an extra to get your time for PIC, yes. At full 3M pay too.

What if you’re an independent? Party loyalty as a requirement for employment is some fascist/communist shit. Unamerican.

Unfortunately with the high need for 3M’s right now, they’ve starting taking on non-PIC 3M’s to sail in PIC positions. Makes it a little tougher on the other officers since we can’t let them stand cargo watch on their own, and need to have someone there to help them during basic operations. But I guess no better way to learn than being put right on the spot. Just wish the office was upfront with these guys, they’ve show up before thinking they would just be an extra while they get their PIC observer time.

Otto Candies does not pay for Travel to the boat.

How wonderfully 1980s bayou of them!

If they are the highest paying company, that may not matter.

That’s weird. I thought the officer in charge of navigation had to be a PIC so a non PIC can’t even legally stand navigation watch.

McAllister

PIC only affects standing cargo watch, cargo/ballast operations, and signing the DOI. They can stand navigational watches like any other vessel. So at least they are partially useful lol. As long as they’re signed on as 3M and have OICNW they’re good to go as far as the bridge is concerned.

I cannot say that I’ve ever heard anything good about the pay at Mac.

This is nothing new, and it will never change. Never heard of any of the smaller companies giving a travel stipend. I’d be surprised if any of them pick up and drop off at the airport either.

For the biggest companies, last I heard ECOs travel stipend maxes out at 400 a hitch (they have scheduled runs to and from MSY and free lodging), HOS maxes out at 1000 a hitch (fend for yourself on ground transportation and lodging). Tidewater and Harvey may have an allowance of some sort and pick up/drop off at MSY. Not sure if they have lodging while people are waiting for crew changes.

Can anyone else add some details?

This is good info too. That 1000 a day you are making can become 400 a day after taxes, insurance, last minute flights, hotels and ubers/taxiis.

Harvey have pick ups and drop off’s at the airport, 500$ stipend for travel each way. No need to get a hotel as they will put you on a boat that’s at the dock until the boat your suppose to get on arrives.

Tidewater pays for your flights and have free lodging in Amelia. Also have pickup/drop off’s from/to msy airport.

Most are doing 12s but not a ton of cargo. Long sea passages so it’s not like the coastwise where you are constantly doing cargo.

 That sure cuts down on the foreign influence from places like Georgia, Missouri etc.

You’d be surprised. Not a single person on my current ship is from Louisiana. Mostly Florida and Virginia.

Oh, and what @Ctony didn’t mention about that stipend? It’s calculated as the crow flies, so if you live in, let’s say, Tampa… to travel the distance they calculate to the office, you’re gonna need a boat.

With Candies you only need to get to the office, which is right over the bridge from the airport. They transport you from the office to Fourchon.
