I remember being told about “as the crow flies” calculation for paying the travel. Perhaps they figured everyone has a private jet like they do. Of course they also only decide to match the 401K once a year, if it suits them. Don’t know if that ever changed but it sure pissed off a lot of people years ago when at the end of the year they decided, nah..we can’t afford it this year. You guys are SOL. Gotta love the audacity of some of GOM operators. But if you take any job there with the understanding it’s a temp job and nothing more you can get some experience. Move on before the next crash
For the large supply boats the day rates are about:
Mates without DP - $575
Mates w/DP and Night Engineer- $750
Chief Mate (3rd Captain)-$950
Relief Master and Relief Chief Engineer- $1000
Master and Chief engineer- $1100
Some companies are a little higher or little lower but that’s about the average.
Same rates from 2012. Only difference is 1k a day in 2024 is nowhere near what is was in 2012. Sucks.
Judging by the amount of internal job postings….something has to shake loose at ECO pretty soon, especially for Chief Engineers.
Moran paying “Barge Captains” the same day rate as a harbor mate or chief engineer! Not too happy for an AB ticket and a 5 day PIC class.
They prefer Americans with conservative values. The statement about only Republicans is disingenuous.
That was the 2014 tax year, and the announcement actually happened well into 2015. February as I recall.
What are the rotations? You don’t mean 27 days on, 30 days off…
For every 30 days worked you get 27 paid vacation days.
And yet there’s a shortage of AB’s with a 5-day class willing and able to fill the jobs. The Market Forces called.
MEBADeckie, & Capt_0 are a riot! You guys want to learn how to actually drive a ship, come work on a dredge. 8 hr watch working in the Houston ship channel will send the deep sea boys home in shock. Dredges are not required to take pilots in US ports (the only exception being Valdez Alaska). I’ve had 8 Mate’s go on to become ship pilots over the years, because we actually drive ships and work constantly in pilotage waters. Dredge mates will top a 400’ ship around in a 450’ wide channel, and land on a spud barge or pumpout buoy multiple times a day during a pumpoff job. No shoulder boards or white shirts boy’s, just hard work and shiphandling!
But if you run aground can’t you just dredge your way out?
I’m not sure that Tankerman being overpaid at Mate and Chief Engineer rates has much to do with market forces.
I’ve seen that happen for decades. Particularly at so-called “tankerman companies.”
Current market forces definitely favor licensed engineers that can actually fix things. On short term contracts they are sometimes the highest paid guy on the boat.
Not on a trailing suction hopper dredge (ie ship dredge). Dredging IS a contact sport, and you do run aground because we have to work the toeline (extreme edge of the channel) or dig a shallow borrow area for beach sand. generally we just back her off, but occasionally will have to pump some dredge spoil out of the hopper to remove draft. The worst I’ve seen is sitting on our own load while littoral dumping in Pensacola on a split hull dredge, we had to wait a day for a high tide to get her off.
Otto candies pay is same as the other big OSV companies in the GOM. I believe many years ago they paid a bit more, however that’s not the case now. Worth noting on the IMR vessel there are no ABs, Mates also serve as deck hands. They do not pay travel pay, no holiday pay and the retirement plan match is 1.5%. The insurance is not as good as Chouest or Hornbeck. So if you add all that up, the other big companies are offering more to their employees.
Another case of second and third generation inheritors running a company into the ground. I think the term now is nepo children.
I can agree with that. The turn over rate is fairly high most of the new hires don’t stick around to long.
I doubt they’d hire a newly minted PIC in that role. That would be like a tanker hiring someone whose never pumped cargo before straight as chief mate.
Most companies have new Tankerman pay rates until they get checked off onboard and go to full Tankerman rate.
That’s very different from “barge Captain” though.
