Making the jump from deep sea

I was wondering what company’s I should look at if I want to come closer to shore in regards to work. I have ten years of deep sea engineering from 3rd A/e on Motor/GT vessels and just finished sailing Chief Engineer for the past year. Just trying to get away from the 6 to 8 months at a time and get something that is a month or so back and forth. Which company’s should I be looking at and which ones to stay away from etc. I know my ten years deep sea might have hurt me especially because it was on gov’t vessels… Any input would be great. BTW Not looking to land a CE job right away, but build myself up again within a company.

Do a search on this site for threads about these companies; HOS Hornbeck Offshore Services, ECO Edison Chouest Offshore, Harvey Gulf, Otto Candies and Gulfmark. Once you look through all of that if you have any questions come back here and we’ll go from there.

Don’t waste your time with OSV companies. Apply to Seadrill or Transocean.

Drilling companies of all stripes are currently offering best rotation and pay options.

Lots of fun stuff to do shoreside for experienced engineers, but that is a different topic when you are ready, and no so much available on the Cape or nearby…

I don’t see how it would be anymore of a waste of time to apply at OSV companies over drilling companies. Also most of the OSV companies offer the same even time schedules and the pay is comparable. If he’s looking to get in the oilfield he should explore all options.

I disagree, I interviewed with one drilling company last year. the big “E” and what they offered for a chiefs spot was almost pitiful, compared to what I make on construction boats. The benefits were a little better but the schedule was exactly the same.

No debate on my end.

Two of my own family shifted from OSV to drilling contractors this year and are happy, as are their friends… But the variety of options for good engineers is excellent nowadays, and there is opportunity everywhere.

I moved from the Cape to Germany because an opportunity here was good. Family, dogs and all…

So Shawn - look everywhere and enjoy ! Good luck.
