Made the drive down yesterday to knock down doors… No luck yet. Went to hornbeck, gulfmark, gol, secor, oceaneering, otto candies, larborde. I did have one offer from secor as an AB, still considering it ( I have a 3rd mate unlimited license without DP). Hornbeck wanted to hire me, but no DP. Any tips for tomorrow?
Try Chouest. If you are hired they can put you through DP>
Sorry bud no top company is going to hire you and throw you directly in the wheel house. Especially if you have no oil field experience and especially no DP experience.
I would expect the same i I tried to jump to blue water or tugs. Why should you be different?
If one was new to the oilfield, an ab position at Seacor would be a great starting point, in my opinion.
You skipped Harvey. There are GLMA guys there. Don’t give up so quick and an AB spot would be a great way to at least get your foot in the door.
No luck yet? Someone offerrd you a damn job.

Duhh he’s earned the right to be the skipper of a brand new 300’ boat and he wants to exercise that right!
Take an AB spot in the oilfield and learn the ropes… you’ll have your foot in the door AND you have your ticket so you’d be on a fast track to move up as well as learning and making a living at the same time.
Said it once and here it goes again…ANY fresh cadet too good to put in some deck time, is obviously far too good to be in my wheelhouse.
Actually he’s been working as a mate for a few years now. Not exactly fresh outta the academy, but there’s still room left on the holier-than-thou band wagon so hop on.
I always love the Im to good to sail AB because I went to an academy. Our current cadet is this way. Hes slowly learning the facts of life and Im glad Im the one that breaks those dreams
I bet your wife is glad you are such a prick too!
I am not a fresh cadet, and I have sailed as AB before. I love it when hause pipers that get pissed about academy guys getting mates positions ( duh that’s why we went to school). You better get used to more and more companies hiring academy guys straight to the wheelhouse because in ten years or so, hause piping will a thing of the past. In the rest of the maritime industry (other than OSV), hause pipers are kinda rare.
Had to go and stick your foot in your mouth didn’t you? First of its Hawse Pipe, you know, one of those boat part things. Second I’m not sure what parts of the industry you’ve worked in, but Hawse pipers are hardly rare.
Interesting how expensive education is supposed to replace experience, as I have worked with educated engineers who couldn’t deal with real life situations ( nothing like welding shark jaws in knee deep water). I respect the book knowledge grads bring but still need to learn on the job too

Not pissed…I’m employed…as a captain
Money well spent at that academy…maybe next time they will teach maritime terminology. PS, might want to work on your interviewing or resume if you hit all those companies and only got offered that…

Hey I just let them know that they wont come back and work as a mate within the first year on a tug. It always shocks them. The assistant we have came to the boat and within the first week was telling us how his school told him people look down on hawspipers.
Taken a Crap job or two, with a degree and “big license” myself…45’ crewboat when the NY layoffs of 2009 hit. who cares if it will get you in the door. After a certain point, personally I will not go back on deck, but certainly wouldn’t expect to be on my own standing a watch! And I’d say I have decent time as master with that previously said. I’m not in the gulf but have enough of a network down there to not bother wasting time without DP induction in your pocket at this point. If they get in a people crunch maybe it will change but spend a few grand and get it. Should pay for itself in short order…
And why the hell would you only have a 3rds if you have been sailing? Upgraded out of school as soon as I could…
I’m a hawsepiper and I work tugs. Started as an OS and I’m now a mate aboard a tug. So we aren’t rare.
Please, everyone who is a hawse pipe mariner. not all Academy guys are arrogant. As an Academy guy , all I ask is to be judged on my ability as a man and worker, and not be stereo typed. This goes for Academy guys that stereotype hawse pipers.
