Sitting for 1600 master, and have been using Mariner Advancement. Working pretty good so far. Going to sit with Ken Bruce when I get off in two weeks.
Planning on sitting with Ken, work a hitch, then test. Wanting to change study programs, just to keep my brain sharp. Looking at Capt. Joe’s or Malware ( we have Internet onboard).
My question–With no module codes on my letter from NMC, is Malware still the best, or will I be studying anything and everything ???

Thanks Guys
Is seems very odd that you do not have module codes on your approval letter. The REC is going to need the module codes in order to know what modules to test you on. Perhaps you should ask NMC for the module codes.
However, Modules 054 (Rules of the Road), and 201 through 206, seem to be typical for Master 1600. For that matter, there does not seem to be too much difference between 201-206, or Modules141-146 for 3rd Mate. I think it would be fair to say that most people have the most trouble with 205 (T-Nav), and 206 (Celestial).
You might want to focus on 205 and 206 with Capt Bruce.
Overall, I much prefer Lapware over Capt.Joe’s. I do like some of Capt Joe’s methods of solving problems. It was not easy to get Capt Joe’s running on my computer.
You need to get the module numbers and in my opinion use lap ware to avoid dicking around. It’s your license after all, and time is $. I like lap ware because I could just hammer say fuel consumption questions by the dozen until I could do them with my eyes closed.
I distinctly remember differences between the 1600 master exams and the 3rd mate-mate 500 exams i took a few years prior, weird memory. They were primarily in t-nav, c-nav, and safety.

I agree. There are differences, especially in T-nav and celestial. Master 1600 tests some “management” level topics that are not on the “operational” level 3rd mate exam. This is also some stuff on 3rd Mate that is not on Master 1600. However, the differences are not that great.
I also agree that you should get the specific module numbers for your particular exam and focus on those with Lapware. No reason not to get Capt Joe’s as well. Sometimes when the Lapware solution to a problem did not make sense to me, the Capt Joe solution did, and vice versa.
Ok, I’m an idiot. I do have module codes. What I meant was that my codes are —054xx. No final digits. I guess that’s standard.
Keep the advise coming, and feel free to bash a bit for the modules thing.
That’s all you need. The X’s are the version number of that exam, e.g.05401 is version 1 of 054, 05402 is version 2, etc. There are multiple versions to ensure you’re re-take is niot the same as the one you failed, or that they guy sitting next to you doesn’t have the same test. Also, vwersions get removed from circulation after they have been taking a certain number of times or if a question on it is found to be bad.
Still getting Lapware ( off in 2 days), but have concerns because our satellite internet is a bit hinky. I want a stand alone program as a backup, so I lose no study time. I am using an older version of Mariner Advancement currently, and am looking to replace it.
I would like your opinions on which stand alone software to use for 1600 Master prep. M.A., Hawsepipe, Capt. Joe’s ???
Making good progress so far, and spending a week and a half with Ken Bruce when I get off. Testing after next hitch.

I’m old fashioned. I like books, like the old Bowditch Vol I & II. I used Capt.Joe’s when I was without internet. Obviously, its important to have the Rules of the Road down cold. Nothing beats Lapware for that. Modules 205 & 206 are the most difficult material to learn. The rest of it is no big deal.
Marine education textbooks has a good study guide for Rules of the Road. Houston Marine has a good study USB for the others… Capt. Bruce will teach you terrestrial and plotting.
I have books from Houston and M.E.T., have Bowditch (1981, vol2), tides, etc…
Just using the computer for running through the question pools, familiarizing and finding weaknesses. Just want some fresh material for the final stretch.
