Knocking on Doors in Louisiana

Is Harvey still looking for captains to go to Africa? Do you go to the office in Fourchon to apply?

Yes, Harvey is still looking for Capts. to go to Africa! Yes, you have to come down to the Bayou to apply.

ECO is a good choice if you’re looking to complete your DPO.

I don’t know why you would go down there when you can get in contact with them easily. They all answer the phone eventually, sometimes it takes a few tries. Message me for the info of the person I call at Harvey for jobs.

Yes, they all answer the phones. But, have you been hired by any of them? They will want to interview you and have you pass a physical before you get a job with them. And, yes, I agree with Gladser that ECO is the best company to get your DP certs done, as they have their own school.

It really annoys me that these companies act like its 1980 something. They own and operate dozens of multi million dollar vessels, and yet have one or two people in HR from what I’ve seen. Just the ‘Loosiana’ way I guess.

There may be some hiring over the phone going on these days for certain positions, and if there is its only out of desperation.

Most of these OSV companies would have walk ins daily. Therefore, no need to court someone over the phone 3000 miles away. They don’t like to wait for you to do the ethical thing and give two weeks notice either. So in a nutshell, if you want a job down there bad enough on an OSV its best to show up down there with a seabag with no other obligations holding you back. The odds are against you otherwise, unless they get more desperate.

I got hired and given a start day on the phone with 4 companies. It was for AB rather than mate, but I don’t think they would hire me for mate even if I walked in. No interview required, just a brief phone conversation.

The only thing i need to do is pass a physical, that is implied I guess

The companies I have worked for had no problem waiting as I offered my old company a 4 week notice. The hiring manager simply asked if I ever left them to give them the same courtesy.

Companies don’t give a start day until a physical is completed, background is checked, papers are signed, and they find a boat to put you on. You are not officially hired until all of this is completed. This is very odd that any company could give you a start date without this process. So, did you ever come down and pass your physical? With what company?

More Good News of Making a Comeback in the Oil Industry!

I cannot open this article due to legal reasons, but from other sources I notice that the three top bidders are all US branches of foreign companies. (Equinor, BP and BHP)

They really see mariners without OSV experience as interchangeable parts I think. You can’t put them straight into a senior officer slot so no sense recruiting anyone specific.

Here is the rest of the article, talking about Chevron and Anadarko.
Companies submitting 10 or more high bids included Chevron USA Inc. and Anadarko US Offshore LLC.

Anadarko had the highest total spent, submitting 14 high bids totaling $23,403,070. The company had three of the top 10 single highest bids in the sale.

“We are excited about the results from today’s lease sale, which show a continued upward trend for the year. The total from today’s lease sale and the March sale is the highest since 2015 for high bids,” said Andrea Travnicek, the United States Department of the Interior Deputy Assistant Secretary. “The Gulf of Mexico continues to be a critical part of our nation’s energy infrastructure strengthening our country through increased national security, job creation, and revenues for the American people.

Lease Sale 253 included 14,585 unleased blocks, located from three to 231 miles offshore.

The sale included the Gulf’s Western, Central and Eastern Planning Areas and it included waters that were as shallow as nine feet deep to as deep as 11,115 feet deep.

Mike Celata, director of BOEM’s New Orleans Office, said he’s proud to see so many companies looking to invest in Gulf energy.

“The Gulf of Mexico is the crown jewel of our nation’s energy portfolio,” said Mike Celata, director of BOEM’s New Orleans Office. “As one of the most productive basins in the world, the development of its resources are essential to the nation’s energy security.”

Revenues received from Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) leases (including high bids, rental payments and royalty payments) are directed to the U.S. Treasury, certain Gulf Coast states (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama), the Land and Water Conservation Fund, and the Historic Preservation Fund.

Leases resulting from this sale will include stipulations to protect biologically sensitive resources, mitigate potential adverse effects on protected species, and avoid potential conflicts associated with oil and gas development in the region.

Locally, Port Fourchon celebrated the news of the successful Lease Sale, saying in a Facebook post that the news was great for south Louisiana.

“When your Port services more than 95 percent of all Deepwater Offshore Energy Activity in the GOM, comments such as this one bode well not only for south Louisiana, but the nation as well,” the Port said, referencing Travnicek’s above quote about it being the best lease sale since 2015.

Economic officials have long pointed to 2020 as a year for possible economic growth after a lengthy downturn.

Oil prices remain stagnant, but signs of further deepwater investment in the Gulf show that companies are willing to push past that in the future.

And that’s great news for the Houma-Thibodaux area.

Another bit of GOOD NEWS!
Mariner (Mate) comes down, this week, to take his assessments for his DP license at Marine Training Institute in Gray. He stays at my B&B and gets hired on as an AB with a great company. Will return after Labor Day to go through Orientation and other classes before getting on a boat.

As always, I will be very happy to assist you throughout this process. I ask that you check in on a Sunday afternoon from 4:00 to 6:00 and I will spend an hour or so with you going over all of the companies, contact personnel, planning routes each day, a few extra tips, and questions you may have about anything else.
I still offer a discounted rate of $75/night to mariners looking for work and/or taking classes in the area at Faulk Safety, now called Rely On Nutec in Houma, or the Marine Training Institute (DP Classes) in Gray, LA.
Please call me at (985) 537- 6773 or email me at claudettelp@charter.net, anytime to make reservations.

I guess that’s better news than “nobody is hiring” but not sure I could categorize Mates having to take jobs as ABs as good news.

I do appreciate your ever-optimistic outlook though!

Almost ALL 3rd mate unlimited guys start out as AB’s and in no time work themselves up to a Mate’s position and they are all aware that this is usually the process and very happy. So, it just depends on each person’s circumstances. But, I appreciate your thoughts, as well. Things are definitely moving in a positive direction, though.

Its like this in the towing industry as well. Things will really need to be booming or a bunch of mariners need to hang it up and retire for green mates to get wheelhouse jobs out the gate regulary again.

Good news, again, this week!
A mariner checked in on Sunday and got hired on Monday morning, took his physical, and started classes, Tuesday. ( Environmental, Orientation, Rigging, and then Safe Gulf next week) before going out on a boat.
Don’t forget if you are coming down to get a job as an AB, it is best to have your RFPNW before you come. You can still get hired somewhere, but not with all companies.
