Knocking on Doors in Louisiana

A mariner from Mass. checked in at my B&B on Sunday and was hired, today, at Gulfmark as a third assistant engineer.
He went through the physical, will go home for a few days, and return on Monday to take Safe Gulf and Rigging classes in Houma.
Then, he is out to work at the end of next week.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and your families.

I have called that first number a few times, get an answering service and no call back. I think the Captain and Mate ad might be real but if you ask about the DH spot, things vaporize.

2 mariners checked in on Monday, flew in from California and Colorado, looking for 2nd mate/ 2nd captain jobs.
Both were told from ECO, Otto Candies, Seacor, HOS to come back in January.
Harvey is looking to hire.
Lots of new builds coming out in beginning of 2013.
Happy Holidays to all of you and your families.

Many of you are already aware that I am happy to offer mariners a discounted rate of $60/night while looking for work or going to school in the area.
My B&B is centrally located to all of the companies on LA Hwy 1 and LA Hwy 308, LA Hwy 90 East and West, making it a great spot.
Although I realize that many of you may not have stayed at a B&B before.
When checking in, please be courteous to arrive after 3:00 pm and before 7:00 pm. (Preferably, no late check-ins)
I run this B&B on my own and don’t have a front desk.
I have noticed recently that some mariners are thinking they can arrive at 9;00pm or 10:00pm and expect to "pick my brain about companies in the area"
Other B&B guests are sleeping at this time and I am usually whining down.
If I can be of help to you, please call to make reservations in advance, if possible.
Thanks for everyone’s understanding.

For those knocking on doors, Gulf Logistics in Larose posted an ad in the Lafourche Gazette yesterday for 100T Captains and Exp. Deckhands.
Another was hired, today, as an OS at LA Carrier in Galliano.
What is LA Carrier?
What is LA Carrier?
Its a boat company.

I read through this topic and it looks like a good plan for AB’s and Mates. I didn’t see where any engineers were hired this way. I filled out a ton of applications online and if I don’t hear anything back, I’m probably gonna be catching a flight down. How do most of the engineers get hired at the big boys (Chouest, Hornbeck, GOL, Candies and such?)

1 knock on there door

2 have license and all documents in hand

3 be able to pass a drug test and physical

4 be able to spell your name correctly atleast 3 times in a row without a cheat sheet

5 if you have 1, 2, and 3 covered 4 is debatable

Was planning on showing up on Jan. 21st to harrass some recruiters, Just realized it’s MLK JR. Day :frowning: Guess I’ll move it to Jan. 27th. Does anyone know which of the big companies that won’t allow you to come in and fill out applications or interviews?

Did you try C-Mar, Alliance, and Oceanwide?

I shall be looking into them as well.

I’ll be at ECO come first thing Monday morning and I’ll let y’all know how it goes… here’s to a offer from Mr. Nicky!!

Good news from ā€œA Chateau on the Bayou B&Bā€ down in Raceland, LA

Nicky Collins at ECO hired 4 QMeds, 1 unlicensed engineer, 2 cooks, and 1 AB this morning.
Best wishes to all of you and a very Happy New Year.

Hope one of those cooks is coming to the Carolyn!

My impression from outside the Gulf is that: Gulf companies have already done most of the hiring that they need to.

The job postings have dropped off. The talk of job hopping seems to have dropped way off. The need for day rate increases seems to have disappeared.

I had hoped that a rising tide would lift all boats, but I don’t see many signs that Gulf wage increases and hiring have had much effect on employment and wages outside the Gulf.

It’s winter things are slow right now, as it is every winter.

Come March things will start blowing up then hold on, there is going to be a SEVER man power shortage come the begging of 2014.

HOS starts it all off by dropping a boat a month for the next two years with 20 boats already announced, and we will see on Feb 1 and 19 if they move on their options to build the 40 something else they have planned.

GulfMark has two boats coming the third and forth quarter this year along with two boats in the end of 2014 with options to build two more. Which I expect them to use.

GOL has two supply boats hitting the water right now. two crew boats on the way

Seacor is building six crew boats, look at them to have one hitting the water every quarter.

Chouest has one or two more crew boats getting ready to hit the water. Who knows what their schedule for supply boats is, but a safe assumption is one every quarter.

Bordelon’s first supply boat is hitting the water this quarter, and they should have three more with one each quarter.

Abdon has five boats on the way

Harvey Gulf has one coming out 2nd quarter then taking a break until the end 2013 when it will have eight boats with one hitting the water every quarter.

Jackson Offshore has two supply boats to be delivered in 2014, with options for two more. Look for them to expand their crew boat division soon also.

Otto Candies has one mud boat coming that I know of. They also announced they are building some new construction vessels, say four.

So that’s
46- Supply boats
15- 100 ton boats
79- total if all options are used over the next 3 years.

This doesn’t include a lot of small operators that slipped through, Chouest with their five US yards, or Tidewater as I couldn’t find any numbers for what they are building here in the US.

I also think there are a lot more coming. C&G just had a change of leadership with the old man retiring and the son taking 51% control of the company I see them announcing a new build program soon. Rumor is that Abdon might step into the real work boat market and build an OSV over 100 tons.

Don’t forget that L&M, Laborde, and Odyssea have not announced anything, but they are all strong companies and I cant imagine them not building anything new in the next few years.

Listen to Jemplayer, this is just the calm before the storm.
