GOOD NEWS AT “A CHATEAU ON THE BAYOU BED & BREAKFAST” TODAY!!!
A mariner arrived here on Sunday, went out looking for a job all day, yesterday.
He left here this morning, again, in pursuit and by 10:30 I received a phone call from him saying he was hired by a company I told him to check out.
He is leaving on a boat this afternoon for 28 days.
He said, he was “stoked” and very thankful.
I was happy to hear the good news and wanted to share with all of you.
Best wishes.

Found out today, another bit of good news.
A mariner who had come down in search of an OS job about 6 weeks, ago, called me today.
After working his first 5 week hitch on his new job, while in on his days off, he received a call from another company offering him a better paying job and benefits.
This was a company he had visited while down here 6 weeks, ago, in pursuit of work.
So, the moral of this story is that it pays to come down and "knock on doors"
This is the 2nd time in the last 2 months, that a mariner gets a call from a company after he has already taken a position.
It’s nice to know that some guys have options.
Best wishes to all of you.
If I can be of help to any of you, please feel free to PM, email me at claudettelp@charter.net, or call (985)537-6773.

I drove down from North Carolina on Monday (I had to work my last day here at home on Sunday). I hold a master near coastal 100 grt, AB Unlimited, RFPNW, Lifeboatman, a passport and have previously captained crewboats in the Gulf. I went to HOS first thing on Tuesday morning and they would not hire me as an AB because “it never works out to hire a captain as an AB” and “they are currently overstaffed with AB’s.” He did say that they would be doing a lot of hiring in the spring including training mates with the correct credentials. I spoke with Harvey Shows there and he was a very nice guy. I then crossed the lake and went to GulfMark’s office. I was hired there in about 3 minutes as an AB Unlimited. Just as Mrs. Claudette has said about ECO, you should arrive on Sunday night for GulfMark as well. They like to send you to your physical/drug test on Monday, do your company paperwork on Tuesday and do new hire training Wednesday through Friday. I will be flying back down on Sunday and going through the process next week. I hope that this helps someone else out there. If we all stick together and get the information out to one another, we can all succeed! God Bless!
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW JOB!!!
You made it happen.
Best wishes to you.

Received another message from a mariner, today, that stayed at my B&B about 2 months, ago.
He flew in from California and stayed, here, about 5 days while "knocking on doors"
Although he did not get a job, immediately, he was contacted by one of the companies he visited, shortly after returning home.
He got a job as an AB/mate in training.
They’re sending him to DP school right away and when a mate spot opens or a new build comes out next year he will receive the full mate position, already with my DP classes done!!
Obviously he took this offer in a heartbeat!
He will fly down in November for physical/orientation then on a boat after that’s completed.
Another very happy mariner!!!
It’s so nice to hear from these guys after they have achieved their goals, so that I can share with all of you.
In fact, this guy had been reading my post, so he wanted me to know that he was hired.
It’s amazing how many of these guys return to my B&B when taking classes afterwards.
It’s been another world of friends, along with all of the tourists that visit here.
Have people from Australia and Missouri checking in, today, for the weekend and mariners checking in on Sunday.
One mariner will be taking the apprentice mate/ steersman and radar class at Lafourche Merchant Marine in Raceland.
Another is the guy that is going with the new company with higher wages and better benefits.
He will stay here while taking another physical and paperwork before he goes out with his new company.
It’s interesting to see the networking that goes on here between the mariners, also.
Not only does it continue to keep me abreast, I see mairners learning so much from each other.
Wishing all of you a great week.
Sincerely,
Claudette L. Pitre

Has anyone here been through gulfmark’s preemployment physical? I have heard horror stories about some of these. I can’t think of a reason that I wouldn’t pass it. I am just curious what I am in for.
Just type physical in the search bar up top. considerable amount of conversation there, not necessarily GulfMark but you’ll get the picture.
I’ve been through physicals down here before but have heard some are much worse than others. Thanks
Answered my own question. Basically just a USCG physical. Nothing crazy.
News from “A Chateau on the Bayou Bed & Breakfast"
One mariner checked in on Tuesday and got a job, today, at Jambon Offshore Marine” in Golden Meadow.
His hopes were to get on as an AB, but he wasn’t qualified since he didn’t have the RFPNW nor STCW.
Lots of mariners don’t go out to this company even though I suggest it to them b/c they are located further down the bayou.
This mariner decided to take my advise and started out there, yesterday.
While visiting another company, today, he got a call from them, took his physical and will start next week.
Since he didn’t have the RFPNW, I called LAMPI and found a class for him starting Monday.
He will take this 2 day class and then start his new job with Jambon Boats on Wed.
Also, have a third mate unlimited Academy grad, here, looking for work.
He just started looking, today, b/c he was in a DP class for 4 days at Bieir Radio in Belle Chasse.
Hoping he can find a job, also.
Wishing you all the very best.

One mariner was hired as a mate at L&M BoTruc in Galliano, yesterday.
He went through his physical, filled in paper work, and watched safety videos, today.
He is staying here through the weekend and beginning a full week of safety classes before going out.

Harvey is in need of engineers, also.

Thanks Claudette, I wish I could justify staying at the Chateau however living just a little over an hour further away I have to make the drive. I need your luck to rub off but obviously my fuel economy is too good. Odd we just had a discussion on here about Harvey Gulf that they hire only AB’s for deck crew, I was personally told that by the receptionist and now we hear one of your guest’s was hired on OS. Go figure.
I always love reading you posts Claudette. Thanks for doing what you are doing.
Actually, forgot to mention that ECO hired a 3rd mate unlimited Calif. academy grad. last week as an AB.
He went in on Monday morning, did his physical that afternoon, began Safe Gulf on Tuesday, environmental classes on Wed., rigging at the end of the week.
He is out working in the Gulf of Mexico, now.
He was in the right place at the right time.
Best wishes to all of you.

GOOD NEWS AT “A CHATEAU ON THE BAYOU BED & BREAKFAST” !!!
A California Academy graduate from class of 2012 had been looking for a job for the last 6 months.
He read my threads on gcaptain just a couple of weeks, ago, and realized he needed to make a trip down here.
He flew in yesterday afternoon and made his first stop at ECO this morning.
Nicky Collins immediately hired him as an AB.
He took his physical this morning and is back here at 2:00 to relax for the rest of the day.
He begins his orientation classes tomorrow.
How exciting is that!!!
Nicky also hired another AB and a chief engineer this morning.
Things are picking up, again.
Couldn’t wait to share this good news.

Tell him to act better than the one they hired last week as an AB who is already crying about not being in the wheelhouse…he might be back to stay with you soon job hunting again.
Just some advice to pass along to cadets.
Please note that I never said the young guy who was hired as an AB, last week, stayed at my B&B
He stayed in a hostel in New Orleans.
Therefore, he missed out on my advise which includes exactly your thoughts.
I am aware that many academy grads are overly anxious to be in the wheelhouse.
I was just sharing the fact that one was hired.

Gcsaylor I was told by the receptionist at Harvey last week that she had just been told by her higher ups to start accepting OS apps again
More GOOD NEWS from A Chateau on the Bed & Breakfast.
A 3rd mate Suny academy grad from May 2012 arrived here, yesterday, and was hired today at Edison Chouest.
Another fine young man begins his career with a great company.
2 this week, so far, is pretty good.
Things are picking up after this election.
