So not true, Dont know what Mates you work with but all the Mates I know hold Master lic, Also the guys who came up through the hawsepipe know alot and work hard. Also I believe that a 1600 ton mates lic is worth more money than a 100 ton lic. The 100 ton guy did not spend 1000’s of dollars on school’s and pass the test to get a bigger lic. And if that is the case, Can a 100 ton master serve as Mate on a 1600 ton vessel? NO

Seems to me there is a terrible leadership issue on a vessel that - number one, has a mate that doesn’t know or do shit, and - number two, it being considered most mates are the same.

Let me clarify…the new group of mariners. People who want to get paid and not work for it. We all have these on our vessels. Not all mates are created equal, that is true. This next generation of captains. Should have been more specific.

Not sure what they are paying mates. I believe it is $500 after your signed off. I’m at $850 as a 1600/6000 Master / 2nd Mate working relief captain working even time. I’m sure other companies are paying more, but I’m not a dollar chaser. I started scrubbing toilets at Chouest when I was 18 and being a relief still in my late 20’s, I’m fine where I am at.

Agree 100%, not sure why people think drilling is the easy route. The amount of bs and inter-client and departmental relations make it very demanding. Plus the overall responsibility is definitely more than many other types of vessels. With all the new blood being injected into that industry, the stress levels for management will increase significantly.

All the above is very true and many a new mariner has been shocked to learn that they are on a DRILL ship and not a SHIP drill as has been mentioned before. The marine department is considered a necessary evil with some companies as they feel that the business is drilling and not maritime. Also, many of the drilling companies evolved from jack-ups and they don’t even understand why they need a marine department and if it were not for flag state requirements there would not be a marine department or even engineers. The pay is good but on a responsibility level not that great. If you asked many a drillship captain if he would take a job on one of those big blue ships passing by for less money the response would be, “How much less?” Being a master or chief on a ship is an entirely different job from being the same on a drilling rig shaped like a ship.

It is a very demanding job, and I like it. I cannot see doing anything else after having moved up on the drill ships. It does take a certain type of person, a very hard worker (I do not even look at gCaptain at work), you have to be respected or you will crash, and you have to run your business in such a way that things go without question. Figure that out, and you’re golden.
