I am trying to get info on the pay scale for HOS. I am an AB Unlimited, and I am 2 classes away from sitting for my 3rd mates. I am employeed as of right now, but I am wanting to head in a different direction. Does anyone know what HOS is currently paying? I want to get on LARGE OSV’s with DP. I know things are thin right now, but I gotta ask…
With wants/demands like that HOS isn’t the place for you.
Good luck with your test (seriously) because it is hard. I’ve told some of my ABs who have taken the classes and were looking to upgrade that the test wasn’t easy and they didn’t believe me…well they had to take all 6-7 modules over because they failed one of the tests 3 times.
But assuming you get your license and assuming you do get on with HOS, the biggest OSV you will see will be a 240 while starting out, and I only say that because in theory all of the 220s will be sold before you start… While the ink is still drying, why don’t you learn the responsibilities of being a mate and learning the dp systems, not demanding a 6000 OSV.
There’s a hundred guys like you out there, worked their way up from os to licensed and have experience on deck and hundreds more that have sailed on their license for years. Everyone wants to be in the oil field because right now it’s booming and stable.
Get what you can get, learn it inside and out, then worry about moving up.
Thanks for the heads up everyone. I want to be clear in saying that i do NOT expect to get hired object and be in charge. I am looking at tonnage. I am an AB Tankerman on an ATB and i want to make sure that I go to a vessel with a larger tonnage. I am not, nor have ever looked for a free ride. I have not “demanded” anything, i just am looking for something that will work for ME. I DO thanks you ALL for the input and info. Keep em coming!

Once again,
Thanks for the input and info. I am planning on trying to get hired and work my way up. I expect to take a step or two back to move forward, but taking a $100-$150 a day pay cut to NOT get the tonnage I need would not be a good move. I am not sure where you get this whole “DEMANDING” thing, but if you read my post it is something I am looking for, NOT DEMANDING!!! I am sorry that “your” AB’s thought they would breeze through the exams. I know a few people myself who got “hooked up” with classes and certs, and when it came to exam time, they were SCREWED!! I DO appreciate your info, but I DO NOT appreciate people thinking I want the easy way up to the wheelhouse. All I asked about was pay.
Depends on what you call a “large” OSV. New builds are crewed for the year. No one wants to start at the bottom anymore
Been starting on the bottom my whole career. Just want to get my tonnage. Sailed Deep sea for 7 years, now I am on an ATB and the CG just restricted the tonnage. I am just looking over 1600 so I can have my unlimited time. Thanks for the info.
You asked about HOS and you got your answer, no sugar added. But hey, now I’ll just tell you to use the search function since you want to cry about my answer.
By the way, these guys were neither hooked up or given anything. They paid with their own money, so as I said, a hundred guys like you. Good luck getting on your 1600 ton vessel and I can promise training mates make more than a ab/tankerman.
