It would seem Iran started contravening UNCLOS by impeding general freedom of navigation whereas USA is specifically targeting the cargoes and ships from Iran which is an active belligerent in the war and therefore a legitimate military target.

Who actually knows what started anything and how long ago it was that “this current shitshow” got underway, but the essence of this current shitshow is the Islamic zealots running Iran against the will of their people and that regime’s stated intention encapsulated in the slogan “Death to America" which started in my “1979-whataboutery” not yours.

The Iranian Prime Minister nationalized the oil industry that had previously paid Iran 16% of the profits.
Britain was broke and the British banks were owed money on the refinery so steps were taken.
