Heading South To Apply Around

Hello all,

A little background is that I am an academy graduate with a 3rd Mates Unlimited license, along with all the cool acronyms for certifications accompanying it.
Responses to applications have been less than exciting, and while I have entertained a few different companies and have been offered a few opportunities with tugging, I have my sights set on Offshore Supply. I have a friend who lives in Louisiana and plan to fly down and stay there and make rounds for a couple of days applying in person.
With the market the way it is I would imagine this would be more valuable than a name on a resume coming through email. I plan to hit Chouest, Harvey, Tidewater, and Otto Candies while I’m down there and am simply looking for any information/recommendations anyone has that could be beneficial. Any other known companies in that general region would be appreciated as well.

Thanks all.

Have you been paying attention to the state of the oil and gas/offshore industry lately? There are licensed officers with decades of experience working as ABs if you have offers in other sectors of the industry I would jump on them. All the power to you if you want to try and get hired in the US GOM right now. Not a career move I would make at the moment.

I would expect every OSV company to have large signs taped to their front doors written in fat black marker saying “JES KEEP MOVIN ON DERE YANKEE”

.

Don’t waste your time and money is my recommendation. Applying in person down there is a requirement even when times are outstanding. When times are tough, well, enjoy your free coffee in the HR waiting rooms and take one of those other job offers IMMEDIATELY when you get back home again. Or you may find yourself sitting on the beach for quite a while…

I wish I could afford to take you all in but I only have enough ambrosia and sandwiches to go around.

3rd mate unlimited might get you a doughnut to go with that coffee. Unless you have DP to add to those letters behind your license youre just wasting your time and money right now. Even then all that might get you is a few minutes to bend the personal managers ear.

Try back when oil gets back over $100 bbl.

The Saudis are saying oil should be over $100/barrel after 2025.

Geez you guys, hes probably got a shit load of student debt already, whats another few bucks to go knock on doors? Besides, there is always someone failing a piss test or getting too drunk to show up…

I am surprised he isn’t going right to a drill ship. Oh shit those jobs are kept aside for kings pointers so they can fulfill their obligations on a foreign flag vessel.

Good for you turning down the tug jobs, nothing but scum hawsepipers and criminals out here, horrible place to be. Pampered fucking school children.

One day im going to try to get a job over there with you criminals just so I can see New York.

You fouled up not taking the tug job, tugs will gain you a lot of street cred. in the oil field when the market does recover. A towing endorsement is something really good to have that can set you apart from herd.

Better join AMO if you want work. Only thing in the gulf for you is tugging. Just the facts of life.

We dont need anymore ringknocker know it alls on the tugs anyway. Supply vessels are what you seek my friend.

Yes you should join every union out there to hedge your bets. A union contract is a guarantee to have a job no matter what.

It’s hard to say what’s the best move but don’t turn your nose up at the tugs, lots to be learned there. If you do it right you’ll learn some real seamanship, it will make you a better mariner and as Tkoval says above you will gain some credibility eleswhere.

Thats right, everyone knows if you went to an academy, you have no boat skills!!

Please change your avatar. It hurts to think we graduated from the same place.

You and every other cadet just past coasties buddy. Good luck hand it’s bad timing to head south. Maybe drink beer and chase skirts this summer and pick up a fun crappy paying gig. Check out MMA job shopper!

If it makes you feel better I picked up garbage for 3 months before getting a lucky break. Paid pretty well too. Also take DP basic to stand out from the other graduates. That couple G’s might get you a job or at least a second look.

Sushhhhhhh, No giving away secrets.

“Good for you turning down the tug jobs, nothing but scum hawsepipers and criminals out here, horrible place to be.”

Exactly, now write it down 10 times, “You do not want anything to do with Tugs, they just be hawsepipers there”’
