Graduation project

[LEFT]Dear readers,

I’m starting this thread with a somewhat unusual request. I’m a part-time university following a course called Communication & Multimedia Design. It’s about designing and developing user friendly webpages and interfaces, based on proper research. I’m working on my graduation project at this very moment, which centers around interfaces used in yacht engine rooms. To be able to come up with some good designs, I need to have an insight in the actual users of these interfaces and their work. And this is where you, as visitor of gCaptain, come in. I would be very honoured if you could help me with this part. It would involve answering some questions about your work, your experience and your wishes.
To make things perfectly clear: I will not ask you any details regarding your current vessel or previous ones. I’m only interested in general experiences. Any sensitive information regarding you or the vessel you work on will not be asked for, nor will they published (since I know some information already, of course). Your response, identity and situation will remain completely anonymous. The survey is geared towards yacht engineers, as it is their job I wish to make easier through this project.
I’ve made a form on Google Docs, which can be filled in by just visiting the webpage I linked to below.

Thanks for your time,
Max Steenbergen

Not many yacht types round here fella.

That isn’t really that big a deal, to be honest. Most questions are applicable to engineers on professional shipping vessels as well. I should’ve clarified that a bit, you’re right. In any case: if you’re an engineer as work on boats professionally, I’d love to hear your answers.

I’m a yacht guy. I’ll answer your questions if you post them here. I know everything, so it should make it easy for you.

That’s it I’m getting a wiper job on a yacht and starting over again. That way I can learn everything too.

Deuce: I’m happy to post my questions here, but there are quite a few of them. It may take less of your time and less space in this thread if you were to use the Google Docs form. In any case, I’ll just post the first few questions here to get a discussion going.

Question 1: What is/was your role on board and what are the responsibilities of that role?
Question 2: Could you describe your current workplace? What kind of vessel, engine room size and layout, environmental conditions?

Won’t work. You have to be captain to know everything. Anything less and you are just a typical dumb ass.

Damn! Having that Masters license really does make you master of the universe.

More like master of his own universe!

No man!! Just when you combine it with a big, shiny, white yacht!! Then you truly are the master. Don’t believe me? Just ask any yacht pimp.
