Gap Closing Extension
I found the IMO statement, but not anything from the USCG. The NMC website says nothing about any extensions for us. If I were you, I wouldn’t count an an extension. I got mine a year ago and won’t have any problem, but my employer has been replacing everyone w/o the date limitation off their documents. Several engineers, including the Chang are already gone.
It is not an extension. As noted in this bulletin and the IMO circular, the IMO has recommended delayed enforcement. Individual port states are not obligated to follow the recommendation, and mariners are “strongly encouraged to continue their pursuit of compliance with the new requirements.”

Mr. Cavo, I guess the questions that some would like to know the answer to are:

After January 1st, 2017, will people still be able to work if they don’t have all of their required gap closure courses completed?

After January 1st, 2017, will people still be able to work if they have the gap closure courses completed and have submitted the paperwork but are awaiting processing by the NMC?

After January 1st, 2017, will people still be able to work if they’ve submitted paperwork and have been told by the NMC that the new documents are in the mail?

In my conversations with the NMC, the only delay in enforcement in my understanding, is for assessments for 2M and above with regards to having a qualified assessor sign them off. If you don’t have your stop gap endorsements on a new credential by Jan 1, 2017, you won’t be able to sail internationally. That information is from email conversations with the NMC referencing that bulletin published Dec 12.

This posted today by the NMC. Extension granted for “National” endorsements not STCW endorsements. FYI

I work on the Geat Lakes but also have a Near Coastal Mate less than 200 ton and OICNW<. NMC said I needed ECDIS and Leadeship and Managerial Skills class. But why when my license says II/3? All the requirements seem to be for II/2.

We’ll know for sure at crew change after the 1st. The Nmc still has about a week to grant extensions for guys. One things for sure, everybody should renew or upgrade before the 1st.
