Just making a point. But, why couldn’t the pilot at least put one or two positions on the chart during the the transit? There are minimum of 4 people on the bridge of a ship. He could help the Mate out and provide him some insight and guidance in regards to “his” port - sharing his local knowledge.
We serve as our own pilot once we have accrued the required recency/pilotage as per CFR over the routes we routinely traverse in the northeast. But, we are a one man wheelhouse on a 600’ tug/barge unit drawing 31’, so you are severely handcuffed from performing any administrative tasks while steering.
