EMD 710's

Stepping on a boat next week with a pair of 8-710’s with the electronic control. Ive never been around a 710 before, lots of 567-645 but just wondering if there is anything different to watch for ???

Good luck Brotha!

The 710 is basically a 645 with a bigger power pack. If you worked electronic 645s, then you will be just fine with the 710.

On a side note, 8-710? What’s the point? 12-645 would seem the more likely choice. Or even 10-645 (if they still make those).

Im not a engineer but sailed on a small ro-ro with 710 series. The engineers said they were the only thing positive about the whole ship. Reliable and easy to maintain.

The 8-710’s put out like 200-2200 iirc, Mcallister has repowered several 12 or 16 cyl boats this way.

My limited experience with the 710s is they respond to load a little faster, but that maybe me imagining things from the wheelhouse.

Ive never been on an electronic EMD boat but its all the same shit. Chief on the Buchanan #12. Alot better than flying to the gulf every 2 weeks…

What the hell kind of ro-ro was that? Sounds like a cool gig for a ship if it was small enough to have 710’s in it.

Sounds like the DELTA MARINER.

^^^ Yes, it was the Delta Mariner. Probably one of the smallest unlimited tonnage vessels you can sail on. Interesting run up inland rivers and ocean transits carrying rockets. Keeping to the OP, I never heard anything negative about the EMDs.

EMDs will always take you home… Havent worked on one with eletrical systems, Wish I had them in the tug i work on.

We ve just had multiple DDEC emc failed after several years of service and they are not telling us why.

Tough engine but becareful of turbo charged version, they dont like light loading.

A 1 inch longer stroke, no fuel rack, no fuel linkage, no 2a 2a valve which is a huge plus. Several sensors a ecm …it will be a big change but you will like them. A lot easier than the 567s or 645s imo worked on them all for ladt 31 years
