It is an internet/YouTube thing. If you really want to see some examples, watch a few of the museum ship videos produced nearly daily by “curators” and “hostoriographers” pretending to explain marine engineering via selfies to sycophants who are even less knowledgeable about the topics.
to paraphrase you, more people should:
“… remind His Excellency the Curator, that for the most part crowds of ignorants are viewing and praising Him.”
I agree that Dr. Sal is probably a much more knowledgeable and more capable researcher and commentator for the general public on just about any topic than any of the regular journalists, but that’s not saying much.
Dr. Sal’s PhD in naval and maritime history, and very dated few years of experience as a junior officer at MSC (of all places), do not qualify him as any sort of remotely qualified and credible expert in ship piloting, shiphandling, or marine engineering. He’s just another talking head.
Dr. Sal (and John) became internet impresarios and the go to maritime “experts” simply because they have developed a lot of visibility online and they are easy to find, and eager to comment.
Journalists should have gone to nearby MITAGS and Calhoun, or to this forum, or almost anywhere else, to find actual shiphandling and marine engineering experts.
Dr. Sal lost me several years ago when he arrogantly and erroneously pontificated about an incident on a lobster boat, but showed a photo of a stern trawler. It was obvious enough to me then that Dr. Sal did not know what he was talking about. I see no reason to change my opinion now.
Way back there were a comment in the media about an incident that happened in Australia where a elevator technician got hurt when falling into a shaft that was not properly secured.
No it did NOT happen on M/V Dalia, but on another ship. (Not a sister ship)
That ship was not owned by the same owner as the M/V Dalia, but it was at the time managed by the same company that manage M/V Dali at this time.
There MUST be a connection there somewhere.
Not much on-camera drama to be recorded in those places.
While the event made for dramatic and ratings rising video, professionals speaking about what may have caused it will be really boring for an audience that is hoping for smoking guns and someone to blame.
?? The statement was referring to an audience hoping to see or hear about a smoking gun or someone to blame. That was no different than saying people watch extreme sports or car racing because the chance of a dramatic wreck is likely. Hoping is the operative word, read the post again.
I assumed you were talking about Sal’s videos because that’s what the thread is about.
Wouldn’t google search and the YouTube algorithms have what people hoped or wanted to see be at the top of the search results? Doesn’t appear to be the case.
I am pleased to see you omitted using Dr. when naming Mr. Mercogliano. I feel that putting Dr. before is name is an honorific (which he may have earned) makes him appear more qualified to speak than can be justified. The same holds for using Capt. when referring to John Konrad. He may hold a master’s license but without having been a master gives him the cache of being more qualified than is justified.
It would be good to know what he means when he declares himself Marine Project Manager and the Marine Project Lead? Sounds like he was only in the shipyard and not in command of the DWA when it put to sea? If that is true then he has no true command experience and his using honorific of Capt. is pretty weak. When a man has actually done the job as a master then he can claim the title.
If I am wrong here then I will retract what I question but he fails to state his actual command experience on his LinkedIn profile which I would believe he would want to actually highlight.
The “event” was the allision, not Sal’s video. My post was about the probable reason why reporters don’t go immediately to industry or subject matter experts.
Google “car race viewers hope to see crashes” and you will get 58 thousand results in 0.33 seconds. Google “shipwreck” and see how many you get compared to “ship safety” or “ship handling” or “marine electrical generation and control”. Substitute any other activity and the results will probably be close to the same. Drama gets more views than educational stories or videos.
Where do floral tropical polos count in the “Hawaiian Shirt” scheme. I was reading about the pockets and was concerned because I’m currently wearing a Tommy Bahamas polo shirt with very tropical floral stitching, but alas no pockets at all.
Got nothing to do with facts, it is all about the “clicks”. Even on a small forum
Most reasonable people don’t care about debunking some largely unknown YouTube poster.
Get a life
Are we done with Dr.Salvatore?? I still have few “projects” in prep stage and would be dissapointed if Moderatos decide to close this thread due to visible off topic drift.( may be intentional to provoke closure ) I am sure CEO John K. will be happy to wait.
Re : hawaian shirts i am stunned that some critics of Dr.Sal are suggesting or imputing here that Dr.Sal is buying his lovely shirts in "one dollar " shop. I think this is an insult and can not be tolerated here . Can such comments be moved to a separate Topic : for example “Dr.Sal topware and underware und hardware or sth like that??”
Cheers
Well according to these links Dr.Salvatore has very VALID and impressive scientific academic titles : Msc und PHd and is fully entitled to display them on his business card and everywhere else.
And i am not sure but He may SUE those who publicly tarnish his scientific achievements.
However : He is frequently talking /commentin on topics where He is holding neither Msc ( although i am not sure abt Msc as he finished nautical college/academy or similar) nor PHd in Nautical sciences nor maritime engineering nor polithechnic.
Hence : without further practice and continuous reeducation his theoretical knowledge IS STALE. His 3rd/2nd mate licence is not renewed/revalidated and his term at sea was short and reduced to service on MSC only .
He is perfectly fitted and naturally talented/gifted to run shows like his channel ( have You seen his last ) with his tallent for acting He shall go straight to Hollywood to make a new version of Mutiny on the Bounty with him as Capt William Bligh .God forbid him from playing Fletcher as He would talk Bligh down to death too early.
. More he has COURAGE to confront PUBLICLY the big navy brass and other AUTHORITIES that most of forum members consider i think as ASSHOLES. He apperas to me VERY PATROTIC and i really melt when I hear him talking
The only thing I am expecting or requesting from Dr.Sal is to walk the talk , do more reserach /consluting may be and be profesorial and NOT journalistic , reveling in clikbaits . That is all.
People with a PhD have earned the right to be called Dr.
Just like those who have sailed Master have earned the right to be called Captain. And, if I recall correctly, John did sail as Master for a short period.
