With a lot of union tug/ATB companies getting substantial raises over the last year does anyone know where Vane Brothers is at with pay/quality of life on board. I remember hearing NYC wages differed from anywhere else and ATBs also had a different pay scale. Any input is appreciated.
They got big raises for them prolly on par with every other NYC company
They’re paying over $800 for mates? That’s a bit more than I had heard, but my info is old.
I heard mid 700’s and always said prolly on par and a big raise for “them”
I’m glad they got something, if they do better, we all do better. I feel the wages in the NE need to be higher, no one is applying. The ones we do get don’t have the skill set needed yet.
Is Vane still short? I haven’t seen many hiring ads lately coming from them.
Every day it becomes more and more apparent how much I’m selling myself short as an OSV mate.
Well, the grass isn’t always greener. I often consider where I would be if I sailed deep sea. There just weren’t any jobs when I was looking.
Few months ago, talked to a former relief of mine who’s the chief engineer on one of their atbs. Mid 700s was his rate if i recall correctly. I don’t think they will ever be one of the highest paying companies, but they have perks that kinda make up for it.
Newer, fairly well maintained equipment. They also still pay the time and a half if they ask you to work over. Once a year they get that safety bonus that is substantial for officers. They also have a longevity bonus now.
I hear ya. OSVs were never the plan for me either but I was of the belief they were the only ones hiring and paying well when I started. Still plenty of tine for a course correct, though. Would be put Fourchon to stern soon.
Vanes boats are nice. OSV livin vs tugs probably doesn’t compare but tugs are fun.
OSVs are cool but when they start cutting day rates it’s the fucking worst. I went from 600/day back in 2016 to 300 over night.
I dunno. Maybe I’m naive but I keep hearing things like “don’t expect another payraise for 5-10 years” and “don’t complain about them cutting benefits, it’s only fair because it was a PITA for managers and coordinators to keep track”, and I don’t feel like anyone should have to put up with that. I know, things are getting tight everywhere, but as you say the Gulf is a place with no job stability where the bottom can fall out basically overnight. Some of those guys have this weird loyalty and devotion to their employers, I don’t get it man. OSV crew are glorified temp workers, when you really get down to it. Secure the bag but have an exit strategy ready at all times.
Is that on a 4200 out of Philly, an ATB on the West coast or the tugs up in NYC? All different pay scales, responsibilities and skill sets for those roles. Still not enough if you ask me to be a glorified Tankerman with the same responsibilities as the Master.
I’ve heard Philly and New York are even pay scales now and no more difference in pay between 4200 and 3000 not sure about west coast. West coast mates mostly do sea buoy shit as east coast mates are expected to be able to everything a captain can do in the barge moving world
