COVID-19 Maritime News

For ROOSEVELT and REAGAN it looks like the tug-of-war is between quarantine and herd immunity. For those young, fit sailors it might be better to keep them pier side and let everyone get sick. Any respiratory distress could be treated ashore.

POTUS worked 4D chess on the governors all right. He told them he had tests and ventilators coming, and they believed him. Psych! He’s got the governor of Florida believing his 4d chess even today. 13 other governors issued stay-at-home-orders. But the poor governor of Florida sees the train coming and is asking Fearless Leader if he thinks it’s wise to jumps off the tracks.

Remember the Old Days?
“I don’t care what POTUS says, as long as the stock market is up.” Now he lies and makes up shit almost every day, and people are dying…and, oh yeah, the stock market is down. Does it matter what “the mad genius” says?

The government of Guam is American. There is ample reserve at the Navy, Air Force and Marine bases and hospitals there. That’s not an issue at all.

Far from it Bug, the Zaandam and Carnival chose to bypass the Dutch island of Sint Maarten where the passengers could have been offloaded much earlier and flown home from a Dutch airport just meters away from the tender docks. They chose to put commercial gain ahead of passenger health and needs.

That is surely a criminally negligent act. Stick to facts not your feelings.

I heard the airport has been closed to flights, I have a buddy stuck on a yacht there and the owner stuck here and cant get back

I seem to remember somebody suggested that the Zaandam and Rotterdam should proceed to their home port .Oh yes here it is:

Got some followers as well.

That was before I was reminded that Sint Maarten was a Dutch colony and before I noticed that it was closer to the canal than Fort Lauderdale. It is Dutch “soil” so it is just as good as Rotterdam for the purposes. it is a part of the flag state which was the whole point of my post. Let the flag state deal with its offspring.

There is a notice to airmen (NOTAM) that states the airport is closed to arriving passengers. It is open for cargo flights and for repatriation flights.

If only the powers that be would listen to us experts, the mariners on this forum, I think we could solve a lot of logistics problems pretty damn quick. :smirk:

The Gov. of Guam may be American, but is Guam really American?:

Yes, Guam is American. The people are American citizens. Period. Full stop.

Guam is an American territory without a vote, like Puerto Rico, sorta like a colony of old.

So the District of Columbia is a colony?
This is an old debate on gCaptain, and different people will parse things differently. My view is simple: Are they American citizens? Do they defend the nation in times of war, and get killed defending the nation? Then the land is American and everything else is sophistry. :slightly_smiling_face:

Like DC they are citizens without representation.

They are all citizens, but voting rights differ. D.C. residents can vote in presidential elections. Neither residents of Guam nor Puerto Rico may vote in presidential elections. However, if either of these peoples shall reside within the U.S., they may vote.

Scandalous to still have colonies these days. Luckily we don’t have any.
