Does anyone know whether a course recorder is required onboard a vessel? I had a Chief Engineer (the OIC in ROS) claim we didn’t need one and had it removed. I have yet to see anything to the contrary, but cannot find anything to support his claim. One would think that with a VDR, it wouldn’t be required.
I’ve heard the same thing. The ship I just got off (built in 1983) had one, the ship before that (built 2005) did not. Same company.
No legal requirement…nada in both 46CFR and SOLAS
Thanks for your reply. I don’t even see it in any of our “archived” CFR’s. Not sure if, or when, it actually was ever required. I would imagine the VDR is sufficient in this regard.
