Orange Marine Orders Two More Cable Laying and Repair Vessels from Vard

The VARD 9 03 design is tailored for maintenance of submarine fiber optic telecommunications cables, with emphasis on sea-keeping capability, low fuel consumption and operational efficiency.
The vessels will be based on the same design as CS Sophie Germain, delivered to Orange Marine in July 2023.

Jan De Nul has just celebrated the launch of the William Thomson, one of two giant identical subsea cable‑laying vessels under construction in China. The sister ships have a cargo capacity of 28,000 tonnes and a length of 215 m. Sister vessel Fleeming Jenkin was launched in October 2025 and its delivery is scheduled for the last quarter of 2026. The William Thomson will follow shortly and will be operational in the first half of 2027.
Jan De Nul’s two new cable-laying vessels have been specially built to install cables, both in shallow and ultra-deep waters down to 4,000 m.

Local billion-dollar ship to Japan

On Friday, Vard delivered a cable-laying and construction vessel to the Japanese construction company Toyo Construction.

The handover ceremony for vessel number 980 was held on Friday at Vard Langsten in Tomrefjord.
– It has been very fun, and very challenging. It is the first time we have worked with the Japanese flag. The regulations are only in Japanese so it has been a challenge, but there has been good cooperation with Toyo all the way, says Yngve Beite, project manager at Vard.
The 151-meter long and 28-meter wide vessel is the first vessel Vard delivers to the Japanese offshore wind market.
The hybrid cable-laying and construction vessel is delivered from Vard Langsten, but the hull is built at Vard’s shipyard in Tulcea, Romania.

Great values

The vessel has a cable capacity of 9,000 tons.
In addition to being able to be used as a cable-laying vessel, the vessel has a high-performance crane and a large deck area, making it well suited for multi-purpose operations such as foundation work, mooring work for floating offshore wind and projects related to marine resources.

It will also have a four-point mooring system and a helicopter deck.
The contract value is more than 200 million US dollars, or around two billion Norwegian kroner.
