Depends on the union and the contract. Attending union schools for free is a great benefit for many, but not all.
I hear that in some cases, the union has let tugboat companies sleaze out of paying into the fund for training and the employees/union members must pay if they want to attend their own union school!
Also, some unions donāt offer needed courses often enough or that fit the marinerās schedule. Iāve met plenty of union members attend private schools on their own dime that were complaining bitterly about this.
