Im woking on my mate osv 500 ton assessment (ab-unl to mate) then someone told me to apply for 1600T mate coz the trainings are the same (radar, bst, adv f/f,brm,psc,med. care provider, gmdss, flshing lght). Is the 500 ton mate assessment book different from that of 1600 ton? and how can I get oicnw on my stcw? thanks for any answer/ideas…
500 mate 1600 mate and 3rd mate are all the same test, class requirements and assessments just different sea time requirements
in order to get a 1600 ton mate NC you would need
BRM
MEDICAL
GMDSS
ARPA
SEARCH RESCUE
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
COASTAL
TERRESTRIAL
COMPASS
METEROLOGY
CARGO
STABILITY
SHIPHANDLING
WATCHKEEPING
CELESTIAL
FLASHING LIGHTS
at about 18,000.00 dollars and about a total of 6 months in school
PLUS all the assessments for the OICNW
these info can be found here
http://www.uscg.mil/nmc/checklists.asp
If you are testing for a mate OSV 500 TON you might want to test for your 1600 mate INLAND license as they are about hte same test. THEN when you get all your classes done for the OICNW and assessments done you can upgrade to 1600 NC or 3rd mate without testing again
check out policy letter 1-02
http://www.uscg.mil/nmc/marpers/pag/1-02.pdf
this has all the requirements for the OICNW
good luck

GMDSS, ARPA and Celestial would not be required for the upgrade to NC. GMDSS and ARPA may be required to work on specific vessels.
You will need Basic and Advance Fire Fighting as well as Electronic Navigation. Also, if you don’t have already, Radar (unlimited), BST, PSC and maybe RFPNW.
Thanks guys for the replies!Correct me if I’m wrong, so all the training I got right now (brm, gmdss, adv. firefighting, bst, radar, flashing light, med. care provder, osv assessment) is good only for mate 1600T OSV?Im currently working on osv…how can I get the oicnw endorsement for osv?do they put it in the stcw when I passed the exams?ty
I don’t believe there is a separate STCW-OICNW for OSV. OICNW is good for all positions at operational level. USCG will issue you STCW-OICNW in your new MMC if you have completed all the training/assessments, requested it in your application and paid the fees. Go for the 1600 as you will find slim & none advertisments for 500GRT positions.
the mate OSV is a 50 ton mate license limited to 3000 ITC and OSV only. there are NO OICNW for an OSV until you reach a higher OSV license.
chief mate OSV Master OSV are the next 2 OSV license I think IF your company has a large OSV training program
Are the “assessments” Im reading about here reqired for 1600 mate NC OICNW?
Or are the assessments for OSV Mates only?
Bob
Mate OSV is a special program that your company must have, If your company does not have the program you can not get the license. the assessments are as follows
Use GPS for navigation and emergency procedures
use LORAN if available
use ECHO SOUNDERS
determine magnetic compass error
change steering system in pilot
shift to alternate steering system
fix position by radar
communicate by radio
ship-handling
stow and secure cargo
transfer bulk cargo
transfer fuel
transfer drilling fluids
transfer liquid mud
respond to emergencies
plan and organize 3 drills, man overboard, fire, abandon ship
also 180 of navigation watch RFPNW
not much to it BUT YOUR COMPANY MUST HAVE AN OSV PROGRAM or you can not get the license
it will take a minimum of 180 days to get this because of the RFPNW, former RFPNW can be use with documentation
