Here’s a brief history of myself. I live in Maine and just recieved my 50 Ton Master/Inland (which I know doesn’t amount to anything), AB/Special and Lifeboatman. I did take the STCW classes and recieved my certificates for all the modules. All of my sea time has been on small commercial vessels (under 100 GT) and pleasure boats.
I consider myself reasonably intellegent but this is where things get confusing. I have applied to most of the east coast companies and have spoken with a few. I did find one that was looking for an AB but she said that I didn’t qualify because I didn’t have my STCW certificate and my RFPNW. After reading through what seems like a thousand different web pages I still don’t understand how I get both of these endorsments. Can I just go on a local fishing boat, that is over 100 GT, with a licensed captain and have him sign off on my RFPNW once I have shown competancy in the required fields? Do I just send that into the CG? Any help would be appreciated.
