Sorry for my first post being a question, but the USCG site is hard to find the answers.
I’m looking to upgrade from 100 ton master 500 ton mate/ 3000 ITC OSV that I hold now. I went from AB to this license, being I was never a deck officer they told me that was the highest master I could hold. I’d like to go for the 1600 ton master.
I’ve been running as Mate on a 491 ton boat for 8 years or so ( 2nd issue ). So I’m pretty sure my sea time is good.
Can I upgrade to 1600 ton master from where i’m at?
What will it take to get the OSV off ?
I’m taking it that I will need to retest on all of it? May need to brush up on my T-nav and plotting but i’m sticking with NC as I have now. Do I need flashing lights with NC ? and C-Nac is only for Oceans ?
I just think its time to upgrade before they come out with anymore hoops to jump thru.
Not much boat trash love around here, guess I’ll search a little harder in the forums.
Going to buy Captain Joe’s disk, looks like the most liked. Then I’ll hit fletcher up for refreshing my T-nav and plotting.
I still have my floppy disk from Houston, might as well hit them also if I can find a floppy drive. A little flashing lights and I should be good to go?

Off to do some more searching around here.
Nothing against boat trash, it just that right now we are busy trying to get this Syria thing squared away.
You should be able to upgrade to 1600/3000 ton master.
You will need to take all the tests again.
Celestial is only for an oceans license.
I’m not sure about flashing light, I didn’t need to do it when I upgraded to 1600 ton master oceans but they may require it now, look at the checklist.

Flashing light is only required for unlimited licenses, and for OICNW. If you are going for OICNW andare not applying for an unlimited license, you can do this by completing the assessment on a vessel, only unlimited licenses are required to take a course for this.
I had to take flashing lights to get my 500/1600 master NC. unless it changed again from 2002 you will have to do it. You can do it at a school and present the cert.
When I upgraded to 1600 I had to take flashing lights. Now I am sending in my assessments for OICNW, do I need to take flashing lights again or is the class I took 10 years ago still good?
I am amazed at the guys with upper level licenses that do not know what their requirements to upgrade are. Use the NMC’s website and read the cfr’s. This site has thought me more about advancement paths than anywhere else, but that was when I was an os and a green 100 ton Captain on a crewboat.
I am planning to get the 3rd mate AGT. I took the flashing lights course when I upgraded to 1600 10 years ago. Do I need to take the course again?
