I’m a 3rd Mate, academy graduate 2010 with an unlimited tonnage/any oceans USCG license set to expire in September. I spent most of the time since then sailing aboard unlimited tonnage vessels.
I have already handled the physical and the application for license renewal, but I’m stumped about which training I’m required to take to renew my license.
I’m certain that I need to take Radar Observer and probably ECDIS.
I know that there are new STCW rules in effect or about to take effect that may require other courses as well (BST and Shipboard Medical f.ex.).
Does anyone have useful info. concerning which classes/training that the Coast Guard will require to renew my license? I’m going to take a look on the Coast Guard Web site as well.
Appreciate any helpful info. that anyone might have.
Have you been sailing on your 3/M license? If you have not already done so, you will need to have either the VPDSD endorsement or the VSO endorsement. VPDSD can be obtained with a 1-day course and VSO can be obtained witha 2-day course.

They are not required to renew or to get any other endorsement. But it might be tough to get work without them…

How is that you’ve been out since 2010 sailing on ships and have not upgraded to 2/m, thereby making your renewal further out than 9/2015? Hell, all you had to do was mail in some paperwork and a check…

I am in the process of waiting to hear back. They are not super great to deal with but its worth the frustration if you can get the answers you need.
I have a 2/m 1600t masters OICNW and Master not more than 3000GT. For my STCW endorsements (OICNW and Master not more than 3000GT) I will need to take a leadership class before December 2016 or my STCW will be invalid.
I believe that there are two types of leadership coursed with one being more involved than the other. (Still waiting to hear back from NMC). You will most likely need once of those courses to cover your OICNW. I think its called leadership and team working skills and the higher lever course is leadership and managerial skills which is required for masters not more than 3000gt.
I am not sure if the managerial skills course will cover the lesser course but if so it might be worth going for that course if your planning upgrading in the future.
The USCG has new checklist covering STCW renewals that might be worth your time to look at.

I discussed the difference in the leadership requirement and other changes for STCW renewals here.
