Hi all, I have been faced with a time sensitive Licence upgrade requirement for my job. The Company I work for just changed the minimum required licence from 100 to 200T master near coastal, with a minimum amount of time to comply. I currently have a 100T master 200T Mate NC, and was courios if it will require testing for me to make the upgrade to 200T master? I am aware or the sea time requirements and that I will have to complete an application for this upgrade.
My understanding when I originally obtained my current licence was that the jump from 200T mate to 200T master was just a sea service requirement and no testing, however there have been alot of changes in licencing requirements in the last few years. Thanks for any help I can get.
I know the 200 master upgrade is a 5 day class. I wouldn’t think the upgrade from mate 200 to master 200 is only a sea time requirement. Probably on the nmc checklist website.
What company is it?

Sea time only. For 200 Ton and lower licenses, the exams are based on tonnage and not mate/master. When you upgrade from any 100 ton license to any 200 ton license you test, but don’t test again for any other 200 ton license (for the same route). The exam for mate 200 is the same as for master 200.

This is very helpful, thank you. I’ve been through the NMC web site looking for this info and couldn’t find it anywhere. I know you’re a respected name around here, I appreciate your time.

It used tio be found in the NMC “Exam Guide.” That publication was revised and the new version doesn’t have that information. The only other source of the info I’m aware of is 46 CFR 11.910, and it’s not explicit. It has mate/master and 100 and 200 tons all as a single column ij t the table with footnotes indicating that some subjects are for 100 tons or more.
