1600 master....adding unlimited endorsement

Anyone have any info on the path of getting an unlimited endorsement added to your 1600ton masters. Anybody do this? I hear it done all the time with 2nd mates getting there 1600masters. I am hearing time as master and tonnage…any input would be great! Thanks.

There is a path in place for 2nd Mate Unlimited to get a 1600 Master with an examination. The converse is not true.

The path from Master 1600 to Master Unlimited involves Third Mate Unlimited, Second Mate Unlimited, Chief Mate Unlimited, then finally Master Unlimited.

this subject been covered over and over and over again here for the past five years…search the old threads to get the answers you seek

besides, there is no such animal as an unlimited endorsement…only a full license.

Whatever, endors, lic…just want an unlimited title after a “license” and thought someone had a quick answer, i will look around the threads for more info.

I gave you the quick answer.

Oh I got it… You want the fastest and easiest way to add " unlimited" to your license because you like the way it sounds? Do you need an unlimited license? For some it was a long hard road to gain unlimited tickets… It takes sea time on large vessels, test, schools and certifications. It’s not a weekend obtainable endorsement.

Wow, sorry to bother you all. I have worked my way up the ladder since 97’. I thought this was a decent site…

Look at the checklists on the NMC site-------that MAY answer some questions!!

It is a decent site filled with invaluable information but we old farts here ask that people search through old threads first before asking basic questions. If you had spent a little time here first you would know that already.

Pardon us for not wanting to answer them over and over and over again here.

Now, you’ll hear no more from me on this because I am sick to death of pissing matches with people over this very subject. That too, is getting very old!

Been searching the threads and good info is being found! Thanks and good luck fighting all your matches.
Keep the faith!

You dont? Lets be serious here a good chunk of the stuff we have to learn is from the 1960s when the yard and stay was state of the art cargo handling equipment. Other than navigational, stability, and operational stuff how much of what we test on do we use on a daily basis?

I don’t what? Yes, we learned a lot of info for testing that may or may not be real world in each circumstance. I will say that I’ve found education is not a waste as it can be applied to other topics. So what has that got to do with someone asking about limitations on a license? Are you saying that we unlimited crowd leaned off topic details in your view and hence gaining an unlimited licenses should be easier? Sorry, I don’t get the connection or the point you were attempting to make.

Personally, I think they should do away with the limited license all together. Go to something like Europe has. They have various levels, but the knowledge base is similar. These 50, 100 ton, and 1600 would go away. Either you have a license or you don’t. Years back the oil field enjoyed limited licensed man power. These days the vessels are getting larger and going more places, hence even the oil field now enjoys and even seeks unlimited licensed personnel. Gone are the 200 mile limited bunch that navigated off a block chart that specifically indicated " not to be used for navigation". These guys used them as they didn’t know how to plot a frigging loran line. I know, early in my career between shipping jobs I worked in the gulf and was amazed at the lack of nautical education. One “captain” was even surprised to learn there was East longitude in the world. Unfrigging believable . Dumping the limited license would upscale the professional abilities of the ones that held a license. I’d hate to be in charge of man power with some of these boat companies. You employ a 1600 " master" only to find out he has no ocean endorsement when the vessel is tasked with a job outside of the US prompting you to locate one that does, must be a nightmare for manning.

It’s all in the CFR.

“Unlimited” doesn’t appear on any license, it is a slang term for a license “of any gross tons”.

Very true, commonly termed unlimited meaning AGT as per the license.

You can get a master AGT Inland license if you have 2nd mate AGT Oceans and 1600 Master for at least a year. No testing, all you got to do is ask. Or at least you used to be able to

AGT inland?

Incorrect, you have to take the five master AGT Inland exams.

Yes, master AGT inland.

Interesting, What type of vessel would run inland of unlimited tonnage? I’m curious… ( associating " inland " with push boats and the like). Great lakes?
