I’m looking into making the jump from 1600 Master to 3rd Mate. Have any of you done this? Are there any companies or organizations that have programs in place to help mariners make this jump - the classes needed are many and the cost substantial. Also, one of the ladies at MPT was saying something about being able to go direct to Chief Mate from Master 1600 - any truth to this? Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
What is the exact plan you have layed out to delineate what you need to do to make this jump?
What exactly are the classes you think are needed?
The ladies at MPT sometimes are not right.
I suppose the first thing I need to do is ask the USCG for an evaluation but I believe I need the following OICNW mods to make the jump…
Electronic Navigation, Shiphandling &Steering, Stability and Ships Construction, Cargo Handling, Meteorology, Search and Rescue, Terrestrial and Coastal Navigation, Emergency Procedures, Watch keeping, Compass
My end goal is getting on a large DP vessel ie a drill ship, MODU, etc… I’ve already taken the DP Basic course. A job with Edison Chouest would be ideal since they seem to offer all the training in-house but I can’t seem to get a call back from them.
You don’t need all those classes if you can get the assessments signed off per Policy letter 11-07.
If you cant get the assessments signed off the classes generally substitute for the signed off assessments, you must verify through their approval letter exactly which assessments are covered by each class.

The issue I have there is I work on a foreign flagged vessel with a foreign captain. As I understand it he can’t sign off on any assessments.
Will any of the drilling companies hire a 1600 ton Master with just DP basic? That would solve a lot of problems - I think…
NO, they won’t!

They will if you got your Unlimited DP Certificate prior to 1Jan2012, a preponderance of experience and great leadership skills…

Ha! Ya that would solve a lot of folks problems! Looks like you need a job change and get the assesments signed or make it the chool you listed.

Yep I figured a job change is in the cards as is a trip to Galliano to hand my CV to Nicky Collins personally. I’ve heard nothing but good about Edison Chouest and their support of their employees.
What about any of the shipping companies. Do any of them have programs in place to take their AB’s through to 3rd Mate. Unions worth talking too?
If I can find the right organization to put the time and effort into training me; they’ll have every bit of my loyalty.
Thanks everyone for the replies.
