15 American DPO's Wanted

I think it’s ironic tengineer thinks we are held captive in the GOM while the union jobs are dwindling. We see more and more unlimited guys entering the GOM because they are not able to find jobs. The only problem is they have no experience big license just can’t operate a vessel closer than 2 miles from anything.

I also agree with capt. Lee about the Chief mate/Master courses. I am not impressed. However I didn’t expect to be. If you can not perform the task that are required in these courses, how did you get a 2nd mates license?

So what exactly does a DPO do, anyway?

I’m thinking offshore might be a good gig for me when I graduate. I’m trying to get a deckhand job on a California crewboat this summer, if anyone’s got any leads I’d be mighty appreciative.

A DPO is repsonsible for “keeping an eye” on the DP System while the vessel (OSV, PSV, Siesmic, DSV, Drillship, Semi-Sub, in some cases Crew Boat) maintains position in the required location. He/She will monitor the environment (make changes to the system as required), powerplant, and thrusters. If lucky the DPO will have another officer on watch who will be the navigational watch.
Working on deck would help out prior to being in the wheelhouse in the oilfield. You would then know what they experience on deck while doing cargo and can relate a little more when you are asked input on cargo or if you have directive input for the hands. Good luck CMA_Guy!
