Young Deckhand looking for job at sea!

Hey guys, I am a young deckhand in the New York harbor looking to work on bigger ships. I am willing to work on anything, Tug, Cargo, Tankers, OSV, ect. I willing to travel anywhere in the United states. I am tired of working on small boat, I am ready to play with the big toys…

  • I am currently an OS, with a 100 ton captain licenses inland, an unlimited lifeboatman, and STCW 95 BST completed.
If you guys could help me that would be great I am just trying to get my foot in the door, and all the jobs I see here is for AB’s or guys with unlimited licenses. I am at the bottom of that chain, and I am just trying to climb up the hawspipe, Thanks guys.

WARNING! what u are about to read from some of the guys on her may or may not be harsh, ( only because c captain been in a good mood ) just go through all of the threads and you will find an answer, gas up and head to the gulf, good luck

Thanks, It’s ok if some guys say harsh things I been working on boats for about 8 years now, I am used to the harsh stuff old sailor can says. But I have search through the threads here and all I could find for the gulf is AB’s rating jobs and I haven’t gotten my AB ticket yet. Ill guess I keep on searching much more.

Please son…I have not even had my first cup of coffee so haven’t loaded a round into the breach yet let alone sighted you in. I’m giving you fair warning so you can take cover and to change your username. Even a 100ton master does not get to call himself “captain” if all he has is an OS rating.

I further advise for you to use the “search” function and type in such terms as OS, ordinary, wiper, fresh fish! There is much information to read.

Ok, I’m swinging the first shell unto position…the clock is started…

better start running…

Ill make it easy for you, go to the search menu and type in: list of companies to apply to, get the info, from their and then gas up and head to louisiana and pound the pavement, its the same advise they give anyone, who ask.this question

You call yourself “captain”, yet you come on here begging for an os job? You may want to check your ego at the door and work your way up through the ranks, so that you actually earn that title.

Hey… Give the man credit. He has a small license and already acknowledged that. He has said he wants to start as an OS.

The only thing to do would be, as crawdad said; use the search function. Yours is NOT an unusual or different query.

This is not a job service or job finding forum. We happen to have a few nice members who post job openings found online. Some of those jobs are for OS but most are not. If you had actually looked around instead of just looking at one thread (maritime job leads) you would have found the answers to your questions.

I agree with you and respect that…BUT…I can’t help but to laugh at the irony of “Captain Blah Blah”, coming here to look for an OS job. If he had simply mentioned the license in his post then that would have been different in my eyes, but to have it as your screen name on a forum that you are looking for an OS job on is just weird/wrong/funny.

Not just looking for an OS job but he is an OS and has probably never used his license…

On another related note, it is nice to see someone come on who is humble, and not full of: I got a license, and I want a job so I can not work as deckhand.

I have worked with WAY too many who come on with the “Captain License in hand” mentality who think they are a better deckhand than old SEXTANT here…

Or the hot chick.

But knowing that some will not give him a break is sad. The guy is not looking for a hand out, just to be steered in the right direction.

The reason he isn’t getting help is the same as everyone else who comes here asking the same question. He didn’t read the forum first. The answers to his questions are easy to find and recent.

That’s true, but the insults should get a shelf. Until the whining starts. Then the pointy stick comes out.

Ok you guys want to get me then. I am currently a captain for a 220 foot dinner boat so I have experience at the helm so I earn my title as Captain. so I am not just a regular deckhand that got my ticket and dont use it. I want to look for an OS job, due to the fact I been a inland guy my entire life. Now if you guys really think about if Iam trying to get on bigger ships my 100 ton ticket is nothing on bigger ships so I have to start as a OS. Everybody starts as an OS and work them self up. So dont pick on the little guy here. And thanks for the guys that didnt say stupid or cruel stuff to me.

Thanks cappy I hate been a captain of a dinner boat, I want to be deckhand again, but on bigger ships.

REPLY What he said. I’d suggest that you stay with the dinner boat until you can take some classes: AB, RFPNW, Radar Observer, Upgrade to 200 ton Master (all are available at the Seaman’s Institute in NYC or other places nearby). The folks at Seaman’s Institute are very helpful and informative, especially Capt. Shultz.

At minimum, you ought get your AB card and upgrade to Master 200 ASAP. Then you will be ready to look for a job as an OS or AB. You shouldn’t have to spend much, if any, time as an OS.

Alternatively, you might want to consider crewboats in the Gulf, especially crewboats with DP. In about a year you could upgrade to an ocean license and be well on your way to a DP certificate.

Hey man get your AB and try to get on a boat 200 ton and go for you 200 ton master after that go to any supply or crew boat…and don’t let these rude captains get to you because they started as a os back in the day if they didn’t there very good ass kissers…I started on a casino boat now I have a AB unlimited and 200 ton master with mate of towing…
