Shipping powers warn global maritime rulebook is breaking down - Splash247

In a public statement titled In defence of free shipping, the Consultative Shipping Group (CSG), whose members include Greece, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Norway, Denmark, Germany and the UK, said the accumulation of wars, chokepoint disruption, shadow fleets and discriminatory trade measures amounts to a structural change in shipping’s operating environment. The group’s members represent more than a fifth of global trade by tonnage.

Norway’s Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC) has formally named Baltazar, the third and final vessel in a new series of combination carriers designed for the transport of dry bulk cargoes and caustic soda for the aluminium industry.
The 83,000 DWT vessel was christened in Fremantle, Western Australia, on September 15. Like her sister ship Balder, delivered earlier this year, Baltazar was built by China’s New Yangzi Shipbuilding.

Registered in the Marshall Islands, the 228.4-metre vessel has a beam of 34.8 metres, a draught of 14.5 metres and a gross tonnage of 49,234. Her construction involved approximately 14,000 tonnes of steel and was carried out to DNV class requirements.

KCC said the vessel’s dimensions have been optimised for trading routes to and from Australia, while her cargo capacity is around 15% greater than that of the previous generation of vessels she and her sister ships will replace.

Baltazar is equipped with two wind-assist propulsion units, described by KCC as “suction sails”, as well as an air lubrication system and a shaft generator. The vessel is also designed to accommodate future modifications for “zero” or near-zero-emission fuels, supporting KCC’s strategy to improve the efficiency and environmental performance of its fleet.
