I was thinking more of the media, even in some shipping related publication and even in shipping nations, like Norway.
That NYTimes, WaPo or Bloomberg etc. doesn’t have any real understanding of international shipping is not a surprise.
That so called “shipping media” mix up basic shipping terms are unfortunately not unusual either.
I was of the impression that the last Shipping News thread had been shut down, hence a new thread for all and sundry shipping news, in stead of opening a new for every event in the news, big or small.

The reason that the ships detained in China has been largely under Panamanian flag lately, MAY or may not be because of the situation around the container ports in Panama.
Likewise, the interference by POTUS in Panamanian affairs and treats to “take back” control of the Panama Canal, MAY or may not be the reason Panama cancelled the long term contract with Hutchison.

Don’t buy a ship if you need the money you think you can make with the ship. A large shipowner told me that years ago but it didn’t make much sense at the time. A few years later that wisdom was obvious.
Begining of 2000 it was easy to become a ship owner. Dentist , doctors , legal eagles with extra cash in hand could escape taxes by investing in shipping/ships. One minimal part was 5000 usd.
So there were many owners of one ship registered as one who chartered it by demise to professional ship manager (tech/ops/crew/ISM) who has been empowered to sign and negotiate time charter parties with those who new how to acquire cargoes for such ship in a liner trade. The best and safe arrangement was to time charter it to first class operator for 10 years or longer.
You could also buy parts as a master . With lets say 200 000 usd in ship parts you could have negotiating power to demand to be established as permanent master what had obvious advantages for ship condition in general including paper work, maintenance records , not to mention familiarity with the ship and it’s equipment .
None of your relievers could screw up hugely in two months or less what you have achieved by years of taking care of and screw ups were easily traceble. Having a good pernament Cheng was also a huge advantage.
