This question is specifically for jdcavo, but I would appreciate all input.
It’s my understanding that on a 2997 itc vessel I could get a third mate unlimited. Now would I be able to work on that same vessel as a 500 ton mate, accruing sea time towards the third mate, or would I have to be an AB or os for the time to go towards the 3rd mate unlimited?
If it is an OSV and you have an OSV Mate 3000 then you can work as mate. If neither of those apply then you cannot be mate on there since your license is 500 tons and the boat is 2997 tons.
You can get a third mate on any vessel over 200 grt / 500 gt (itc). It doesn’t need to be 2997 gt (itc).

Any time on a vessel over 1600grt / 3000 gt counts. You can be mate on a vessel over that limit but under your restriction, or you can work as an AB, or you can work as a master osv 6000 on an osv over 3000 gt.
If you work under your license in the “highest grade licensed” it takes 180 days, any other capacity takes 360 days, over 1600/3000.
(By the way, that is all in the CFRs if you ever decide to stop taking peoples’ word for it and look things up yourself…)
Just read the checklist. If you are on a vessel that is 2997 itc you will get unlimited tonnage once you meet the sea time. Cfrs are listed on the checklist for 3rd mate if you want to look them up.
