Woods Hole Has Invented A Whale & Dolphin Collision Avoidance System

Here ya go deckies! Another thingamajig for the bridge that you guys can play with, spend a couple days training on & maybe get a fancy certificate for? You get an alarm & have 4 miles to alter course to save the whales. :whale::whale::whale:

How long before the whalers use it ?

Certainly you mean “whale researchers” right?

The whalers use their knowledge of where and when the whale species they are after move long the migration routes they have followed for centuries.
When out hunting they use binoculars to spot the pods and their eyes to see spouts of individual whales in the pod to target, just like they have for at least a century.

That is why the whale hunter boats still have a craw’s nest on their mast:

May be difficult to avoid this super pod of dolphins:

But then dolphins usually manage to stay clear of ships and boats

I remember seeing a similar gathering of dolphins early in my career while passing through the Strait of Gibraltar. I was just by chance on deck and believe it to be a once in a lifetime encounter.

From the article below:

“One of the larger humpback whale populations in the Southern Hemisphere, with an estimate of 20,000 individuals, comes to the Bahia coast to breed and calve from July to November.”

I’ve never seen whales like I did in this place. My ship was there twice for a few months each time. All the surrounding ports were too small for larger vessels so had to work out of a beautiful place 6-7 hrs north called Ilheus. The whales would mate perpendicular to the horizon with their tales sticking straight up out of the water. They can’t move while getting their groove on so slow bell everywhere & no commercial traffic October to June. For me, after a couple of weeks there, seeing thousands of whales fucking nonstop, the thrill of whale watching was over for the rest of my life. I haven’t taken a picture or gone out of my way to see whale since.
