Women do the same work men do. You can be a deckhand, engineer, cook, steward…what is your interest?
Marry a guy that goes to sea and spend his money, I know Catherder, I will now go to my room and hang my head in shame,
In my years of sailing I had the Pleasure to work with some Females that did a wonderful job. I only had a problem with one Mate that just could not do the heavy lifting. I tried to work with her (as I would have done with anyone that was just too small to physically to do some of the heavy lifting. She pulled an attitude that caused a small birds nest on the tow winch because she just did not have it to pull the slack.
So, to the OP you need to decide what you want to do, Deck Engine or Stewards Dept and start working towards getting what you need. So, please post which direction you think you would want and I am sure that someone here can point you in the correct direction.
Catherder I would like to work a cook or a steward. I just got my TWIC card, Z card, Safe Gulf. I had sign up to get my STCW from Sea School. I was going to get that because that’s what all am lacking for is the basic cards to start working offshore. But I have never been offshore and don’t have any exp at all… And then Someone had told me about the SIU Union that it would be good to go to the .The Unlicensed Apprentice Program and that would help me. I don’t know what is the best route to go?? Go get my STCW with my other cards that I already have and go knock on doors in Louisiana and hope to get hired without exp. or Go head and Join SIU Union… Am so ready to work…

Military Sealift Command.
I just called Military Sealift Command and she said that I would have to fly out to Va if I get chosen. I live close by Louisiana Bayunner
And if you joined MSC you wouldn’t see much of home ever again. Perhaps trying to get on the rigs would be better. I wouldn’t really know where to start (never did a search function on gCaptain for it), but crew changes would most likely be more on time than ships, and they probably have better more stable schedules (2wks on/2wks off?). Just a thought.
Oh okay I didn’t know like I said am very new to this offshore industry… On a rig or a boat it does matter to me I can work 28/14 or longer it would be fine. I have no man or little kids so it;s fine with me. Am just trying to get my foot in somebody door. I have 3 cards already and going to get my STCW card in Oct at a SeaSchool… I don’t have any exp working offshores so I hope that wouldn’t be a problem after I get my STWC… I was gonna join SIU Union school but am thinking I should just get my STCW and go to LA and knock on doors… Just don’t know what to do
If you want to work for the stewards department. Maybe try some of the big offshore steward/cook companies like Sodexo. I don’t know any others but that’s who we have on my boat. They are in charge of all laundry, food, and cleaning of the house.
Google “offshore catering,” that should give you several to look into I’m a tug guy so I don’t know all the companies but quite a few show up.
Just looking at a few, it seems that there are plenty of “woman owned” companies…what could be better than to try those first?

Just curious… have you ever been on a boat… in rough weather? Do you know if you get seasick? Pretty miserable on a boat if you do… just saying.
Do you have food service experience/training? If not, a larger outfit like Sodexo might be a good place to learn and move up… or at least get experience.
The cook on my boat works for global out of houma. He says they are always looking for a good cook. Might be a good place to try out and get a taste of the industry.
Oh okay great I will put in a application with that company I have cooking exp but not offshore
What are you waiting on girlfriend!!! We’ve got all kinds of women at the Company of Choice! You have all kinds of opportunities awaiting you if your cool with not leaving a small steel or aluminum hull that leaks and moves all hours of the day and night. Oh yeah the pay is great but are you ready to surrender your life to cooking and cleaning, chipping and painting all while working with 5-25 men and women you never met and can’t get away from? If so your own your way sailor!!
