Why can't i get in a Maritime Academy?

The moment i decide to apply to Suny, they implement the 2 letters of recommendation policy and basically i’m a loner, i have been backpacking Asia for the last good part of this year and the only person that knows me here in the USA is basically my mother now.

GLMA cant accept me since i had a Misdemeanor arrest awhile back, their policy states that if you have a arrest no matter if convicted or not you can’t join the school.

Why i’m not allowed to follow my dream? I really want to go to Suny but why all the BS to join? first i applied and my application was never acknowledged then by the time i try to apply again they implement this 2 letter of recommendation policy.

Why? I’m basically the right person to do this type of work, someone that does not care about being stable in one place, a adventurous, a traveler.

I really Hate SUNY… i see them as a obstacle between me and my reality now.

I’m about to just get a Mechanical Engineering degree and go get my 3\A license through a alternative way, if anyone from SUNY admissions reads this… only thing i can say is THANKS FOR NOTHING.

No one is stopping you…this sounds like a minor setback. It’s called life bro. Get a job get to know some people and get your recommendations. Just a heads up you need three recommendations to get an original license, you were going to face this sooner or later. As far as GLMA not accepting you sometimes decisions come back to haunt us, but it does seem a little ridiculous that you cannot be accepted even if you were not convicted, I mean were you convicted? Traffic tickets are misdemeanors.

Reckless driving Misdemeanor (adjudication was withheld)

What’s left? Cal? their next semester starts August of 2012 i can’t wait until next year, Maine has a bunch of pre requirements like calculus that are needed, and texas well i don’t know much about them.

Get a TWIC and try and find an OS job on a tug any were or on a crew boat in the gulf and hawsepipe your way up if you feel schools are stone walling you.

There are advantages and disadvantages to going to school or hawsepipe, but there are many ways to skin the cat in this industry.

Try another academy! You got Cal-maritime, Texas Maritime, and great lakes. One will take you in. Or you could get a job and work your way up!!

If you were to go to Cal next year, you better move there now. If you don’t establish residency in the state they will charger out of state tuition. Thats pretty much double. Need to have lived in the state for a year I believe.

There has to be two warm bodies here in the states that will write you some semblance of a reco letter… Even if you spent the last year in Asia, (Im assuming you’re in the 18-22 year old range), you still have 16-20 years of relationships to draw from. If SUNY maritime is your “Dream”, then treat it like a dream and beg, borrow and plead your way to two letters. High school teachers? Youth Sports coaches? Previous job supervisors? There HAS to be two people…

lol… I was thinking the same thing. Go out and meet a couple people and there are your letters. You never knew anyone here?

Welcome to college. Any place you think your going to get an accredited Mechanical Engineering degree is probably even harder to get into than SUNY Maritime.

I think cal is full up already, they also have to ability to be more selective now from what I have been told.

You leave for a few months and now no one but your Mom acknowledges your existence? I guess we don’t have to ask why, based on the rest of your tantrum. There’s got to be a school where you can get an advanced degree in narcissism. You’d get it quickly, credit by examination.
