I don’t think I could have been a good warrior or navy mariner because this makes me feel kind of sad. Screw the Axis WW2 submariners whose only goal was to sink merchant ships. But a part of me feels bad for all other mariners who perish at sea. The whole of Iran’s fleet in the Gulf of Oman has been sunk. I hope most of the ships were at dock empty?

As a former submarine sailor on WW2 vintage diesel boats I feel a great affinity for those U-boat sailors who were doing the same job I was, serving their country without regard for the politics of the madmen running it, and find that comment very offensive.
Thank you for you service. It actually sounded like fun working those old subs. While there’s many stories of U-boats showing mercy to merchant mariners trying to survive after attacks, there’s just a many “publicized” stories of them doing the opposite. I know US Merchant Mariners slept better with every U-boat put out of commission. No offense to you but I still say screw ‘em. Murderous bastards.
Just heard a briefing confirming that a US Submarine sank an Iranian ship with a single torpedo. This most likely accounts for the vessel that sunk off Sri-Lanka
In war there are two types ships, submarines and targets. My dad had a ship shot out from under him in WW II by a U-boat. Later he said he kinda admired them as they surfaced in the middle of the convoy before opening fire at night and sinking the ships. Saved the torpedoes for later.. He REALLY admired the Canadian Coast Guard for picking them up. After the war my mom later hired a captured U boat commander who was a POW for 2 years and decided to stay in the US after. He and my Dad had some interesting conversations, all friendly. There were advantages to being a baby boomer

The American sub fleet was busy DOING THE EXACT SAME THING in the Pacific. American submariners testified for the defense when German sub skippers were on trial after the war and put an end to that, they said the U-Boat skippers did exactly what we did.
The Kriegsmarine was also probably least Nazi-fied of all the German forces.

To me this is a definite escalation. It’s one thing to sink an Iranian ship near Iran but this ship was hunted down on the high seas, far from Iran, in international waters. Definitely a message sender.
I’ve been keeping up with some friends trapped in the Gulf when all this started right over their heads. Hopefully this means they can quit drifting like sitting ducks and get out for once and for all in the next few days.
What a bloody mess.
Tactically it makes perfect sense to sink all their ships everywhere to make the gulfs & straits in that region safe after the fighting is over. But this sends many other messages too. Who does Iran supposed to surrender to since there wasn’t a declaration of war from the US? Surrender to Israel? Since Congress wasn’t consulted on this nor approved, should Iran surrender to the US Military as if it’s a standalone entity? Maybe just to Trump & Israel? If Iran sends an envoy to the US Congress to negotiate peace, I’m sure the lady at the front desk would just shrug her shoulders. Tell them the elected, civilian branch of our government has very little to do with any of this & send them to the Pentagon or Wall Street.

We haven’t declared war since WW2. Have had plenty of enemy combatants surrender to us. Particularly, during the Iraqi Gulf Wars 1 and 2
