Who is offering online maritime classes?

I was recently trying to set a schedule to take a class in Houston, Then of course my company says oh please stay on until Monday. Ok no biggie I call and cancel the class but keep the one for Wednesday on the books Tuesday comes and its the same story so I can and cancel again. so being a very determined person I went in search for online classes to take them. I did this with the 40 hazwopper and it worked out fine even tho I have still yet to actually have to use the cert.
So the question is does anyone know of or preferably have taken any online classes for anything with the maritime industry?
What for?
Where?
How much?
What did you think of it?
What classes can you take? examples, rig pas, safe gulf, hazwopper, BRM, Intro to watch keeping or anything at all to do with the maritime industry?
I found one for Rig pass at :PetroEd Multimedia, Inc.

They want 205 for the rig pass class which isnt bad but then they want 46 to 73 dollars to mail you the usb stick. Didnt seem like a very honest way of shipping the postal service flat rate box for the biggest one is 14.95 I am pretty sure the would fit a usb stick, a Cd, and heck even a book or 5.
It just seems to me if you can be taking classes online when you can and at school when you know you got time off to make you a better mariner then why not.
Thanks ahead of time for all those who answer this

In the end, it sounds like PetroEd isn’t a terrible deal if you need the training for your job but you can try Petrofac

Thank you very much for the reply I will check them out.

The only thing that I have seen that is USCG approved are some online classes for a 100 ton master. Seems like everything else they want your ass in a classroom.

There are also crowd management and crisis management courses. It’s not that “we” want classroom training, we only require that practical exercises be perfromed live, and the final exam be done live (identity issues). It’s more liklely that good distance learning is not cheap to develop, and is probably not economically viable without economies of scale that the maritime industry doesn’t usually have. In my time with course approvals at NMC (over 10 years, until 2009), the only distance learning courses submitted were for OUPV and 100 ton licenses, the STCW passenger ship trainign I mentioned, and some short-lived courses fdor the classroom portions of BST.

Where are the 100ton online approved courses listed

Nm found one and it seems like you still have to test at a REC

Not at an REC. At the offerng school’s facility, or a temporary, local facility of the school.

Its really to bad there isn’t more out there for online stuff. I am sure alot of the stuff that is taught in some of the classes can be done online, and it would be cheaper for the schools because would need less building size, but I do see the argument of program development. I just wish things where more efficient save travel, time away from home (since we have enough already been home 6 days in last 3.5 months), cost, etc. if we could save the ones that really need the hands on for the classroom. But wishing and reality are two different things.

Have you looked at Lloyd’s Maritime Academy (www.lloydsmaritimeacademy.com/LMAgcap)? They’ve got a range of online courses from short intros to fully accredited postgrad/MBA progs so should have something to suit, without needing to disrupt other commitments you’ve got going on. Hope that helps!

Mariners Learning Center has an on line 100 ton course approved. However you do have to appear in person and one of their (and they have a lot of them, our school is one of them) authorized testing sites to take the exams. You can find a link at our web site: http://www.avtec.edu/AMTC-Courses.htm
