What do the good companies want

trying to get all my ducks in a row before I walk in the door to a good company and ask for a job. I have been running 4 point anchor dive boats for a while now. I have no DP. I hold a 500 Ton master. I will be getting my 1600 Ton master very soon. I also will be getting my Arpa next time home. I do plan on going to the first DP school to have in hand before I apply at the big companies. I do not have my GMDSS yet either. I have Basic and advanced fire fighting, Medical care provider, BRM, Radar observer unlimited, AB any, RFPNW, Flashing lights, and all the other basic classes.

What will the better companies want to see to make me were they want to hire me on the spot? I also have been with my company now for over 5 years, and have upgraded everything within this 5 years. So I believe that will prove that I am not a company jumper that leaves just for a few more bucks a day.

First, work on your grammar. A few of those sentences were pretty hard to get through. Second, do a search on here to find past threads that have the same info you are looking for. And lastly, go to the companies’ web pages and look at the license requirements for the job you want. It will list any certifications you need (arpa, gmdss, ect.)

Sounds like you have your “ducks in a row” just keep with your plan and you’ll be fine.

They are more than likely going to want GMDSS, however in all other respects you are ahead of the game

You can have your MMC endorsed for OSV Master 3000 ITC just by asking.

I’d consider getting the GMDSS class out of the way. It is less expensive than DP, and a lot of employers are looking for it.

The last time I was knocking on doors, my present employer asked me two questions to get past the receptionist: 1) What license did I have (Master 500), and 2) did I have GMDSS? (Yes). That got me in the door, and they immediately sent me to DP class on their nickel.

And if the NMC balks at giving you your 3000 ITC endorsment, cite USCG Policy Letter 07-00. (I had to!)

Incidentally, a lot of boats in the oil patch are running under their ITC tonnage, so the Master 500 will open up a lot more doors with the 3000 ITC endorsement.

I would absolutely do the gmdss class first. No dp, you can still get hired, no gmdss, they won’t even look at you.
