does this all apply to inland work?
inland work…towboats/pushboats…entry level…you will severely limit your employment options in an already depressed indusrty…you will need a TWIC card minimum…suggest a MMC w/ OS rating additionally…some companies will hire you with out the MMC…you do not need the STCW 95 BST for inland work thus far??
progression for advancement goes something like this…entry level deckhand/OS > Lead deckhand/deck mate > licensed tankerman (a good “ticket” to have) > apprentice mate/steersman > TOAR > licensed “pilot”/mate > licensed master/captain…this is more or less how my nephew advanced to his current position as inland “pilot”…he gets seasick in any thing over 2’ seas…if your interested in engineering someone else needs to advise you.
suggest you search the forum for further imformation…for the most part most of what is discussed on here is of an “offshore” nature…possibly there is someone on here with “direct” inland experience who is willing to advise you further?
might want to review the check lists for tankerman and apprentice mate/steersman…would not worry about any other advancement criteria for now…by the time you get apprentice mate the NMC will most likely have made changes…welcome to the world of the merchant marine!!
