If we had had anything like VDR when I was second mate it wouldn’t have made for riveting listening.
I rarely talked or argued with myself.
My best guess as to this captain’s reasons is simply that he was nosy with a hint of paranoia and he just wanted to know if anyone was talking smack behind his back. This was back in the floppy disk era and the crew had to hand over their disks to him so he could forward their correspondence. He didn’t hide the fact that he read them prior to sending them under the pretext that it was a security issue. This was a MSP ship so I think his stated reason was BS and he was just nosy.
