been asked by my assessor what safety feature is fitted into the vent on a fuel tank?
Based on what I think and my research, I’m assuming its to do with Solas 5.3.3
to prevent the passage of flame.
Any thoughts guys? many thanks

You need to start using the CFR’s. Once you learn your way around them you are guranteed to pick up at least 10 questions on many CG exams.
Forgive my ignorance Ernie, but whats a CFR?

Code of Federal Regulations. Where most USCG maritime knowledge comes from or is referenced.

Also for your reading pleasure , check out the Marine Safety Manual volume III…Lots of good info in that one as well…
bigdunc122,
Most of the guys on here are US based so they are referring to the United States Code of Federal Regulations. Sounds to me like you are taking your assessment elsewhere. I’d agree that the assessor is referring to a flame screen.

One Safety feature would be the flame screen but there is also a requirement to prevent seawater from entering a vent if the deck was to become awash. You need to look in the US CFR’s as others have suggested and can be found in any classification society construction requirements.
