USCG Rescues Idiots Sailing to Australia in Flimsy Boat During Winter Storm

Almost as nutz as this brain trust from last year.

Why do we go to such effort to allow these types to continue degrading the gene pool?

The world would have been a boring place without all the idiots.

That’s why the government keeps coming up with more safety regs.

As stupid as this was, it still doesn’t hold a candle to “Raw Faith” in the late winter/early spring of 2011. Let the memory of that little debacle take some of the sting away from this one.

And all of them are in the shadow of the greatest WAFI of all times, captain Robin Walbridge and the not so surprising loss of the Bounty.

That one slipped by me for some reason. Thanks for posting.

What is this “Raw Faith” incident you speak of?

Can’t the USCG declare a voyage “Manifestly Unsafe” and prohibit departure? I thought they had that authority.

In this case, it probably would not do much good as the fools would have gone out anyway.

As we all know, the USCG is a net with some pretty wide holes in places. Could you imagine them having to check every dinghy in every harbor in and out just in case the guy drivin’ it thought he could take it to Timbuktu? Then there’s the guy who says he’s going out to his mooring but he’s really headed for Timbuktu. The USCG, in its infinite wisdom could never manage such a task unless we fitted every piece of flotsam that someone could ride on with AIS so it could be tracked. Given the current limits of manning and technology we’re limited to the honor system for the foreseeable future.

The USCG actually did inspect that boat prior to departure.

Apparently the USCG standards for “seaworthiness” don’t fully take into account the ability of a vessel to handle a high seas blizzard.

What do they take into account about the seaworthiness of the crew? Clearly those metrics are a little off too…

The only thing that any “inspection” if that boat probably took into account was if it had a couple pfds, a handful of flares, and a throwable boat cushion. Oh and don’t forget the whistle.
I was watching the network news with my wife when I originally saw this, and immediately said to her, “WTF were those morons doing out in a sailboat on a day like this?”

As a sailboater myself and also a Licensed Master 50T, on behalf of my sane WAFI brethren I apologize for these morons. Even if they don’t give a rat’s ass about their own lives, you’d think they might have some respect for the USCG types who have to go out and save them.
I sail as well…and I used to be one of the guys that came from the sky and picked these guys off a ship. Any decent mariner knows to avoid storms. These fool hearty ones are a different lot when you harness them for the lift from certain death though…the puppy dog look and generally no one is in charge except me…amazing how they loose control. That loss of control is the difference in “what they know and what they thought they knew”.

I know the guys that go and get them are full of piss and vinegar … show no fear and take it as it rolls out … good men. I hear stories of storms at sea lots…most of them have never seen a storm nor know the power of the sea.

All the best,

It’s a shame part of the story reads “Australian” idiots, as although they most certainly are irresponsible dickheads that, in my opinion, deserved to be left there, they are clearly Not sailors, and never will be, and so they do not represent those of us Australian’s who sail offshore passionately and also work out here professionally, with a great deal of pride and respect for this environment.

Maybe only licensed Mariners can get a epirb. That way rec boaters would have to study before going offshore.
