Upgrade mate1600t to master1600t

I’ve asked NMC what I had to do to upgrade from mate 1600t Oceans to master 1600t, only reply I got from them was turn in paper work. I have plenty of sea time since I received credential in June of 2009. My Question is do I need to retake all the modules?

You have to take the complete test. You are not “re-taking” anything, they are different modules. (except Rules, rules is the same for everyone)

Thanks. Just wondering cause some of my peers tells me due to policy letter CG-543 NO. 11-07 that came out dated June 17, 2011, the haswepipers that tested recently just need to have sea time on their credential to upgrade as long it’s for same tonnage.

I hold a Master 1600 O/C and I’m having to and I’ll say this “re-take” the test for 3RD MATE I’m testing at the end of the month. There are like almost nothing differant about the tests this whole system is bull!@#$ if their is a differance then why not test on those items only. Just go from 1600 MATE to 3RD MATE with no test and from 3RD MATE to 1600 Master with a 70 question exam. The only people that loose here are the Master 1600.

I guess… Except you upgraded due to a longstanding loophole in the system. It was never intended for people to attain management level licenses without first serving on the operational level. Be grateful for what you got and fulfill the requirements for OICNW and move on. That was my responsible answer.

My sarcastic response is more like this:

It always tickles that super duper 1600 Masters balk at having to take a test that is so beneath their knowledge and experience. I mean if you are so awesome what is the big deal?

As far as the tests being the same… They are not. The material is similar but weighted quite differently. The CNav and TNav being big ones. Ex: you can pass the master exam without kniwing the first thing about tides and currents. You might have 2 questions on your Nav General. The supposition being you already learned how to do this as a Mate. You CANNOT pas the OICNW exam without knowing them. You will have one of each on your TNAV worth 10 points each. I could go on and on, but what matters is that the requirements are what they are and if you want to advance, handle it. Whining on here sure won’t fix it.

The only difference in the tests boils down to tide/current problems on the mates test that aren’t on master 1600(terrestrial and chart) and sunrise/sunsets on the 1600 master, not on mate.

Other than a few other minor issues, everything else is the same. Therefore it doesn’t make sense that a crossover exam covering only the additional information is ok for mates but not vice versa.

Whiing NO, the fact that the system is screwed YES. Maybe you need to take your Med’s and get some rest old man.

If they have approved you to upgrade (and it is an upgrade) to 3rd mate unlimited (without a tonnage limitation), who cares if you have to take the test? Its just another test — big deal !

  1) I have mine soooo... whatever, and FYI had to take both FULL exams, no crossover.

 2) No system is perfect.

 3) You're still a whiner.

For those of you who are actually motivated, good luck, study hard, go get paid.

I agree with a crossover exam 100%

But they can make all the flaming hoops they want…I’ll just keep jumping through. Haven’t caught on fire yet
