Time requirement for upgrade?

Does anyone know the time and tonnage required to go from 1600t/Master to 3rd Mate Unlimited? Are there any loopholes?

Try this:

http://www.uscg.mil/nmc/checklists/MCP-FM-NMC5-19%203rd%20Mate%20AGT.pdf?list1=%2Fnmc%2Fchecklists%2FMCP-FM-NMC5-19+3rd+Mate+AGT.pdf&B1=GO!

That has been discussed extensively on here. The first question is easy enough to answer just by going to the cfr and looking under third mate…

Thanks to both you guys. Have looked at CFR’s previously but have been trying to find a policy letter that has said something completely different. Will get back to you if i find it

What did this policy letter say?

Even if you do, the NMC is going to go by the CFR and ignore your policy letter. Go ahead, ask for reconsideration … you have no basis for it, but knock yourself out.

Here’s an idea … accept that your career choices put limitations on the license you are able to achieve and get on with your life.

I know.

See 46 CFR 11.407. It’s three years of total service on vessels over 200 GRT, 6 months must be as AB.

I was under the impression that 1/2 of that time needen to be on vessels over 1600grt if you wanted to forego the tonnage limitation.

“needed”… Sorry.

Or one year as master of vessels over 200grt while holding a 1600ton master. You will be subject to a tonnage limitations for not having time over 1600grt though.

That is correct.

This seems to be a weak part on the cg. I had a few people on past vessels have problems with it. Some got it some didn’t.
