Anyone know if you can be a LANT mariner and report to the PAC pool, receive S&Q, and have travel paid to a ship?
About how much money would an entry level take home at the end of the yearā¦I am a wiper!!
I am a bit relectant to reccomend becomming SRS. You are right, it can be very tough to get a relief. If you have a license then once you are a 2nd Mate or 2nd Engineer you have to quit the program. But if you are young and in good shape, then go for it. The extra $$$ adds up. Most ships are good about paying the swimmers. Some Chief Mates may try to knock the pay down, but it is right there in the CMPI, so let the pay disputes fly. I have found that swimmers typically win thier pay disputes when it comes down to that.
What about disputes as you work towards your Master (i.e. climb rank quicker than someone who isnāt SRS certified)?
CMPI?
hey guys i am a new hire myself and am just waiting to start my neo⦠you guys know how often the orientations run? i am a 3rd assistant engineerā¦thanks for the help
How long you being working at AFLOAT PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT? MUST BE IN THE OFFICE WORKING WITH THE RETAILERS. SEEMS LIKE YOU HAVE NOT BEEN ON SHIPS. TO SAY THE BEST COMPANY TO WORK FOR SOUNDS LIKE A SALES PITCH TO ME. SO IF THERE IS A SALES PITCH WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON WITH MSC. TO HAVE SALES MEN WORKING AS RECRUITERS?DONāT BLOW SMOKE UP MY!*** WE KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON MSC IS NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE AND THERE LOSING PEOPLE AS FAST AS THERE HIRING THEM! LONG VOYAGES LITTLE LEAVE COMPENSATION IS AVERAGE AMMO SHIPS MAKING 90 DOLLARS AND HOUR TRUE BUT IT IS ROTATED SO ON DAY OUT OF MONTH. YOUR NOT SLINGING AMMO EVERYDAY TRUST ME!! YOU HAVE DUTY SECTIONS AND TEAMS YOUR TEAM MIGHT SLING AMMO ONCE A MONTH. LETS JUST SAY MSC IS STABLE THAT IS THE BENEFIT AND IT TAKES AND ACT OF GOD TO FIRE A PERMANENT CIVMAR. THAT IS WHEN RETAILERS SEND THEM TO CRAPPY SHIPS NOT MAKING OT. THEN THEY TRY TO SAY THERE NON FIT FOR DUTY AND THERE TOO OLD. SOUNDS FAMILIAR . BETTER OFF GOING UNION AND JOING SIU AT LEAST YOU CAN KEEP YOUR WIFE .
do ABās gross 8-10k/month on an average MSC ship? Or does this fit the higher paying ships?
The ONLY thing garaunteed at MSC or any other company is your base wage. Can you make that kind of money there. Yes sometimes. Luck of the draw. Depends on what type of ship youāre on, what its doing, where its doing it, how often its doing it and if you have a Chief Mate who isnāt trying to save the OT money.
How can a chief mate save on OT when an electronic device breaks down?
What if you do your 20 without a day off, will you stay on a good ship?
LOL. Kinda what I was thinking about the sales pitch. Most guys I know that went MSC outa school couldnāt wait to get their 5 years in so they could waive the MEBA fee and get the hell off MSC ships. Also I have heard of guys putting in for reliefs after 6 months, only to be dragged out to 9 months and longer. One benefit was guys were able to move up on the license very quick.

I donāt know what you mean by doing your 20 without a day off.

The only guarantee at MSC is you will be working for and with morons. You will also have a constant stream of bullshit.
I meant 20 years on the same ship, and telling MSC on the last day something like āI had a nice few years with you, and now Iāll be residing on _____________ (cruise ship) if you need meā.
anyone ever sail as a third engineer with MSC ? and if so how was it?
I worked for MSC in the early 80ās for almost 5 years. It had itās good points and of course itās bad points. Itās a great place for a young person to get started as you get a LOT of seatime. When the ships do pull in they stay much longer than the typical 6 hour to 2 day max turnaround you get sailing a commerical box boat. Also you used to be able to combine your active duty with Civil Service time. If you have an engineers license but havenāt joined a Union yet, then CALL ME! You can get all your Group 1 time in the MEBA while working for MSC AND get your initiation waived. Once you get that you can either come over to Deep Sea as a Group 1 or stay put and get your retirement and then come over, up to you.
actually yea thatās exactly what i had planned on doing was sailing with MSC while in MEBA, but im actually a little financially stuck right now and donāt have much money for the feesā¦im just waiting on my NEO date from MSC other then that im ready to go. You say i dont have to pay the initiaion fee?
If you sail with MSC for I think 5 years then you get the 4k initiation fee waived from MEBA. You may have to sign up first, but I am sure ErnieO can give you the exact details on the process. But to start shipping with MEBA right now, it will cost $100 today. One quarter of dues and you can obtain a group III card. Nothing against MSC, but over the first 5 years with MEBA I made more money than I would have made with MSCā¦a lot more than the 4k I would have saved. You donāt have to make a payment to MEBA for initiation until you start working. The fees are taken out of your vacation check. Also you have to pay them over the course of 2 years. So itās like $160 a month for 24 months, but again it only gets paid when you file for vacation. Again nothing against MSC, it just wasnāt for me and I feel I came out ahead by going right into MEBA.
Those $$$ amounts come straight from DHAMS. That is the computer program we use to put in overtime.
I canāt believe theyāre still using that program. It was originally written by a PAC Captain back in '91 or so and some people say the last version he released is still the best version. A-Ma-Zing.
ErnieO,
Iāve been w/MSC for 4 years and been contemplating joining MEBA. I hold a 2AE UL HP Motor/Gas Turbine License. What do I need to do to join? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I believe this Ernie is the same Ernie who was a rep in Oakland. He is no longer a rep, but Iām sure he can answer your questions on the process. Send him a PM if needed. Also if you cant reach him head to the closest hall, guessing Norfolk for you. We pull into Norfolk a lot and get quite a few ex MSC guys come on for day jobs.
