Lots of guys I’ve worked with swear by the Casio G-Shock but I don’t understand why you’d wear a watch that big. My favorite was the original 2 button on the face timex ironman, looks like they don’t make it anymore but this one looks decent.
That said the old school casio calculator watches were handy in the days before cell phones.
This one?
Timex Men’s Ironman Classic 30 38mm Watch https://a.co/d/ecIbOMS
My current watch came from the gCaptain store and I really like it. It’s not as huge as the other G shock watches, though it is slightly thicker than my Timex Ironman was. Solar powered and automatically sets itself to the time signal.

Yeah I’ve had one of those for the last 30 years…(technically three but only because I lost two).
They just don’t die. Waterproof, loud enough alarm, multiple time zones, and a good timer for dinghy racing (sailing).
No it was this one: Reddit - Dive into anything
Yeah that one is a great watch. We put a lot of time into researching and testing the watches that we selected. Bumber we had to close the store but we just couldn’t compete with random people starting t-shirt stores on instagram and facebook making just a $1 or $2 profit per sale… especially considering our generous return policy.
This is one of the watches I currently own (others include a G-Shock Gulfmaster, some Seiko automatics and a Galaxy smartwatch).
Dead simple, does most things I need it to do, and … Almost a disposable price.
The Casio watches imho are a marvel of functionality, robustness and longevity. I definitely prefer the older G Shock series with the combo of
(a) solar power &
(b) radio clock.
Fully self-reliant, no internet or smartphone needed, no disposable batteries… Unfortunately, they no longer manufacture those.
You can even get spare parts (original or third party) for older models to prolong service life. Mine have gone through very rugged sailing, hiking and biking, some for decades.
The resin case and wristband don’t leave marks or scratches.
I have no need for their ridiculously overpriced 5 k USD flagship models, but if that revenue helps keeping the price down on the more sensible models, that’s fine with me
At work I usually had a cheap Casio, it’s convenient to be able to change time zones without having to find the instructions. Something like this one.
For a while after I got the ship I found myself compulsively checking the time so I got a cheap mechanical analog watch, seeing the analog instead of the digital display helped speed the transition to being shoreside.
Cheap mechanical watches don’t last long however. That’s why I got the one similar to the one in the OP. Figured it’d be more reliable but the analog display is too small and hard to see in bright light,
Think I might give this a try, it’s around $30.

Someone asked “why would you want a watch that big?” So as you get old, you can still read the numbers?
There is truth to this. I have an analog watch I don’t use anymore. It’s gray hands on a black face. Without my reading glasses I cannot make out the hands from the background. But as to g-shocks being too big, I agree, They are like strapping a hockey puck to your wrist.
Wore Casio G-Shock watch for many years, replaced as necessary.
Stopped wearing a watch when I retired 8.5 years ago, for the second time.
Just need one of these:
Most g shocks are huge with tiny numbers so that excuse is invalid.
They are big but when I’m surfing or swimming and not wearing my glasses, it’s good to be able to keep up with the time.
I concur. It just needs some further graduations; breakfast, lunch, beer and dinner.
When you’re working those events are most likely tied to the watch/operational schedule.
When you’re retired those events are whenever you feel like it, or may be tied to your nap time…
My clock has six Saturdays and Sunday.
Before smartphones & internet everywhere, I bought several different types of Casio Foresters for local co-workers in Mexico & Africa. They loved them & the Forester still only costs 20 bucks after all these years. But unfortunately, once most found out the watches only cost $20 they weren’t cherished as much. I’m not a watch wearer but always thought the Foresters were cool. Some people just want expensive watches I guess?
Casio 5600UE is my go to. Love how light and thin it is while still maintaining the G-SHOCK ratings.
