A song of heroes I'm going to sing,
Of days now gone when coal was king.
Of men, who if you met them ashore,
You'd never let them through your door.
Engineers would boast when in their pots
Of how they'd achieved so many knots.
But when, with logic, you boiled it down
'Twas the Black Gang who deserved the crown.
Most came from the slums of deepsea ports,
With drinking and whoring their only sports.
Men from the Mersey, men from the Clyde,
Men from Cardiff and others besides.
Firemen and Trimmers they were named,
Worked in conditions to make you ashamed.
In searing heat that wracked the lungs,
Drenched in sweat with swollen tongues.
Sliced, raked and pitched with all their might,
Till grates were clean and fires were bright.
Hard, grim men wose ideas of fun
Would have struck terror into a Hun.
No officers these, in uniform suits
But singlets, pants and hobnail boots.
Belt buckle turned towards the back,
Between the teeth an old piece of sack.
Though they were rough, they had their pride,
Contempt for Juniors they wouldn't hide,
But give them a man who was tough and fair
They'd maybe respect him, tho' twas rare!
They're history now, their days are no more,
Only a part of an ancient lore.
So we'll pause a moment to give them their due,
They power'd the ships. They turned the screw.
Worked with a mate at Keystone who worked on the lakes as a coal passer on a historic vessel on the UP Michigan. He saw the light and it wasn’t in the boiler.
btw, the problem wasn’t with his heart. Try about a foot and a half south. That’s where the unholy desires were to be found and most hideously unholy they were!
ok…I’m done now, you can secure from emergency stations
Cripes, what am I gonna put on the table when c.captain visits?
Perhaps start the evening off with David Lynch’s heart warming movie

Well I prefer we start off with an unadulterated Maker’s Mark on the rocks before any movie. Regarding what to put on the table for my visit, might I suggest you shield everything in 10mil visqueen? That way I am sure not to soil any of your fine decorator furnishings and you can simply dispose of the evidence after I leave.
You’re welcome. I just wish I could post the pics directly instead of posting them as image links.
Why, your pictures are coming across very nicely. I upload mine from my desktop, gCaptain accepts and assigns a number and that is that.
There are all ways to skin this cat. I could use Image Shack, and have, but stopped.
Kindly keep on posting your pics, they are very nice and appreciated.
